Cadillac Deville 2000

Hi, I have a 2000 Deville with 59000 miles on it and the service engine light came on the other day. When I took it to the dealer the diagnosis was the "torque converter" was stuck off. The code was P0741. The dealer stated that the cost would be about $2700.00. The cost for labor was upwards of $1700.00. I called cadillac customer service and they told me that they would pay for the labor if I would pay for the parts. I told them ok, but when thinking about that, I may have to replace the entire trans. If this is the case I would really be socked. The problem is that you have to drop the trans to find out what is wrong. it could just be a solenoid or the torque converter. But if there is damage to the trans this could be costly. My mechanics have told me that I should trade in the car. Any thoughts? Has this happened to anyone else?

its somewhat common on the caddy's, i was getting it on my last 99 sts, it didnt cause any issues , so i just cleared the code when it did come up.

http://vehicletest.state.ma.us/p0741tsb.pdf check that

Hi Steve,

Did you drive it on long trips after your cleared those codes? I wonder if it is just a wire that is the issue? ? I am going from Chicago to Georgia in a month and I am very concerned. What are your thoughts?

Continuing to drive the car with this problem won't hurt the transmission, however your fuel economy will decrease a little. My car has the same problem and I've driven the car 40k miles without any problems.

I only had the car for about 6 months after the light started coming on for that, some idiot rear ended me, which im kinda glad, cause i had a few other issues with that car........

I would clear the code sometimes and it would go away for months, the longest trip I probably did was about 500 km's though, in one sitting. I put about 20,000 km's on it since the light started coming on for that......
