awise
I need to replace the radiator in my 98 Eldo ETC and I need to know if it has the oil cooler or not. Normally I would just crawl around and figure that out myself, but the car is at my daughters house some distance away and I am planning to do the repair on Sunday. I hate to guess but typically the ETC has all the performance options and thus I would conclude that it would have the engine oil cooler. What have some of you seen, or experienced? Thanks, Al. Cadillac Jim
The engine oil cooler is standard in the ETC. In the 1997 FSM, page 6-193, under Radiator Replacement, item 8 is to remove the engione oil cooler lines from the right radiator end tank. There is no mention of RPO L37 or RPO LD8. I would expect that all radiators listed for this car would have both engine oil and transmission oil coolers. Remember, the only difference between the 1997 and 1998 ETC was the radio, and I'm not sure about that. -- Click Here for CaddyInfo page on "How To" Read Your OBD Codes-- Click Here for my personal page to download my OBD code list as an Excel file, plus other Cadillac data -- See my CaddyInfo car blogs: 2011 CTS-V, 1997 ETC Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars. BodybyFisher
If I am not mistaken, one side of the radiator has the transmission cooler and the other side has the oil cooler, if you see two lines going into the tanks on each side of the radiator you have both.. I think the oil cooler is on the passenger side, and the tranny cooler is on the driver side. I found this so it looks like you have an oil cooler: ENGINE OIL COOLER LINES LEAK OIL (APPLY ADHESIVE TO OIL #83-62-12 - (Aug 25, 1998) SUBJECT: ENGINE OIL COOLER LINES LEAK OIL (APPLY ADHESIVE TO OIL COOLER LINE NUT) MODELS: 1993-97 CADILLAC SEVILLE 1993-98 CADILLAC DEVILLE, ELDORADO CONDITION: SOME CUSTOMERS MAY COMMENT THAT THE ENGINE OIL COOLER LINES APPEAR TO BE LEAKING OIL AT THE ATTACHMENT POINT TO THE ENGINE. JasonA
I don't think the LD8 engines had the oil cooler (I know mine doesn't have it). And actually, I didn't think ANY of the cars had it after the mid-90s, but I guess they did. They're common leak points, and I thought they got away from those some time ago. Even Corvettes don't have them anymore to my knowledge. Jason(2001 STS, White Diamond) "When you turn your car on...does it return the favor?" Ranger
Just to add to the confusion, my '97 Deville had cooler lines on both sides. Just went out and checked the '03 DHS. There is one on the drivers side, that should be the trans cooler. Passenger side was just to hard to see to be sure but if I had to guess, I would say no. Wise Al can your daughter look down on the right side and see if you have two tubing connections there, before you order, Mike Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
JasonA
I will buy the one with the oil cooler and take my chances. I'll follow up on Monday and let you know how I make out. That's certainly safest. If you don't need the oil cooler, you can always leave that part capped off on the radiator. But if your car does have it, you'll be ready. awise
I did what Mike said and had my daughter look down at the radiator and there are indeed tubes connected to the right side tank. Her actual answer was the there were tubes connected to the tanks on both sides of the radiator. I'm pretty lucky in the fact that she is a car girl. She worked at Advance Auto Parts all through high school and was an assistant store manager while she was in college. Although I am happy that she has a good career now I do miss the 20% discount that her auto parts days got me. Thanks again for all the advice. BodybyFisher
Good deal, that is terrific experience for her and helped her not to be intimidated at your request, many would have failed!
