Dave in Texas
'87 Coupe DeVille. I have a recurring problem with the CC. No codes. The switch-test shows them working properly. The problem occurs when I either turn the engine Off or disconnect with the brake pedal. What happens is that it won't hold a steady throttle afterwards. Upon 'resume' it gets back to speed, then immediately throttles back. This action keeps up until I turn the CC Off. Turning it back On (at the CC switch), only continues the behavior. Prior to that it works perfectly. Could this be an electrical input/output problem with the VSS? What is confusing me is why it works properly when I first turn it on, then it doesn't. Might there be a vacuum problem? Thanks for any info..... GM Reman 4.1 engine Dec '
Cadillac Jim
I have a Chilton that covers that year range but see nothing in it for the cruise control. My 1997 factory shop manual has these notices that may be applicable. Check the CRUISE, STOP, and RLY IGN fuses for an open... Check that the cruise control linkage is connected and moving freely. Check for proper operation of the center high-mounted stop lamp (CHMSL). Check for proper operation of the speedometer. Check for proper installation of any aftermarket electronic equipment which may affect the integrity of other systems. Check for a broken (or partially broken) wire inside of insulation which could cause system malfunction but prove good in a continuity/voltage check with a system disconnected. The emphasis in the second quote was mine. You might also make sure that the cables haven't gone out of adjustment. Based on this and your description, I think you have too much slack in one of your cables, or that something is sticking. -- Click Here for CaddyInfo page on "How To" Read Your OBD Codes-- Click Here for my personal page to download my OBD code list as an Excel file, plus other Cadillac data -- See my CaddyInfo car blogs: 2011 CTS-V, 1997 ETC Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars. Dave in Texas
FINALLY fixed it! Not a vacuum problem, but corrosion problem with the electrical connectors to the vacuum solenoid. Cleaned them and put some dielectric grease on....voila!....problem all gone! Maybe this fix will help someone else that is having an odd sporadic problem GM Reman 4.1 engine Dec '
