Installing new instrument cluster

I am replacing my defective analog cluster from my 92 Eldo with one from a junk yard that has been tested and does not seem to have the common failure that these clusters have. My question is will I need to get the IPC flashed so that it will match my mileage or is the mileage stored in PCM and the IPC should just be plug n play?

I seem to recall the FSM saying that the instrument cluster can be R & R'd without changing the milage as it is stored in the PCM. See if everyone (or anyone) else agrees with me.

Mileage is not stored in the ECM/PCM. It is stored in the IPC/cluster.

You would need a Delco cluster diagnostic terminal to change the mileage.

I know when I had the cluster replaced in my '94 Eldo, they had to set the milage in the new cluster to match the old one. You might contact a spedometer shop to verify this for your specific car (and get the cost of the reset if it's necessary). An alternative, at least in California, is to just check the box on the title indicating the milage is incorrect when you sell the car.

I installed the new IPC and it has the same problem my old one had, but at least now my car shows it has 57000 miles instaed of 73000 but I guess I will just have to take it to a speedo place here in town to get it repaired.
