DFletcher
hello!,new here, love what i see!,long time cadillac driver trying to drag another month/two's use out of an 89' Deville FR wheel drive sedan, been a great car!,,everybody in the family has driven it(three teens),doesnt use oil,but now has developed a problem with the digital dash=heater control and fuel panel is `locked up' reads `C' on both panels, sat at a repair shop a full month and i finally picked it up,,,because the shop hadn't touched it ,,,so we're driving it by the odometer since,,,you can't tell how much fuel is in it or control the heater either(has a mind of it's own, dash `blinks' and the heater `might'' start working, wonderful at 100 degreesF!),,anyhow,,,she's an old car i know, not worth taking to the local dealer at this point, planning a new purchase for the wifey before winter but,,this car runs well and it would be nice to keep it around for a spare,IF i could fix the digital nightmare ,,anyone have any clues for me?,,,edit=need to add=i'm a 25+ year autobody guy, worked on cars my whole life,so,,,i can turn a wrench and i have tried `clearing the codes' doesn't seem to work, and my manual barely covers this car,,(chiltons67-89)
Astrak
There is not much else you can do but replace it, or you can remove it and send it to a place like this http://www.instrumentclusters.com/ there are a few others just do a search on google for instrument cluster repair. I just purchased one from a junk yard for my 92 ETC for $75.00 and it works fine.
BodybyFisher
Have you tried to disconnect the battery? I have had two digital dashes rebuilt/fixed... It cost about $180.. Check out modelelectronics... they repaired both for me. You might try calling them to see if what you are getting is a failure mode... Ranger
Have you tried checking the grounds?
Astrak
What codes, if any does the car show? It might be a bad ground but I would think you would have other problems i.e car dying or battery not charging, most likely a transistor has gone bad in the cluster causing it to lose comms with the PCM. DFletcher
well!,,i appreciate the replys!,,unfortunately i believe the car NOW has a head gasket issue so,,looks like `grandma' will be phased out of the fleet, great running powerful (for the engine cubic inches it's astounding) vehicle,,guess it's time to look for an STS before winter gets here thanks again! KHE
4.5/4.9 engines rarely have head gasket issues. The more likely culprit is the intake manifold gasket which is a lot less work to replace so I wouldn't write it off yet... Can you get the car to enter diagnostics? If not, the climate control panel and/or the fuel data center may be defective. You might want to visit a junkyard and buy one of each if you can get them cheap enough. BodybyFisher
If that is the case, I just checked http://www.car-parts.com and you can get a body control module for about $100... There are a TON of them....
