cadillacrazy
I have a '93 ETC with 196k miles and a leaky lower engine seal. I have found a low-mileage '94 engine to swap into it, but want to know if it will swap in withour any mods. Also, if the new engine is the 270hp version, and I'm putting it into a car that originally came with the 295hp engine, will there me any mods needed? Thanks, Carolyn

cadillacrazy
If it is the 270 hp version, can I upgrade the computer to read it correctly, or is this not worth the effort? Bruce Nunnally
The two engines have different cams and cam lobe profiles as well, so that although if you use the 93 PCM (computer) it might work okay, it is likely to have issues. Why not just have the lower block seal repaired on the engine in there now? Surely that is less expensive than swapping engines? cadillacrazy
So, if the 94 engine is the 295 hp version, it will swap in with no mods? as far as fixing the existing engine, I would love to, but I got a quote of $2000 to replace the seal ($5000 at dealer), not including anything else that may have to be done once they look at it. and the '94 engine is $1000. I'm trying to get it running for the least amount possible becasue I have another car I'm rebuilding this year, and can't afford to sink too much into the '93. If anyone has anyother suggestions, please pass them along....
Bruce Nunnally
I think you should be able to use a 93 or 94 northstar 295hp engine with no mods. I think you still want to use the original PCM. How much oil is leaking via the rear seal? Might be cheaper to leave it alone altogether and add a quart of oil now and then. cadillacrazy
Hi, thanks for all the info! It's the lower engine seal that's leaking coolant. It's quite a bit of leaking, smokes like mad if I start it up.
Cadillac Jim
You might look at changing the intake cams and hydraulic lifters while the engine is out. That's an additional expense but it's the main difference between the 270 hp and the 295 hp engines and may be the only difference. I have no idea how much it would cost to change the cams and lifters. -- Click Here for CaddyInfo page on "How To" Read Your OBD Codes-- Click Here for my personal page to download my OBD code list as an Excel file, plus other Cadillac data -- See my CaddyInfo car blogs: 2011 CTS-V, 1997 ETC Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars. Ranger
The two engines also use a different final drive ratio (transmission). 270 hp = 3.11 vs 295 hp = 3.71. This also means different PCM. You can swap between '93 & '94 but not between engine variants. By lower engine seal I assume you mean the halfcase seal? There is no coolant there. zonie77
The seals at the bottom of the engine would leak oil, not coolant. A coolant leak is coming from somewhere else. How does it run? Even with that many miles the N* has a lot of life left. I have a problem with the estimates. $2000 to pull the engine and reseal and reinstall but only $1000 to pull the engine and replace it with a used engine? I assume you mean the used engine is $1000. That means it'll be about $2000 more to install it. If you use a used engine it would be wise to reseal the bottom end before installation, low miles or not. Make sure you include that in the estimates. I don't like to replace a decent known engine (the one in the car) with an unknown engine. Do you have proof of the mileage? NOT someone telling you it's low miles. Almost every used engine people come across has 60K or less. There aren't many 10-13 yr old cars out there with less than 100K, even less with less than 60K. Someone replaced a 300hp with a 275 recently. I didn't save the thread though. He was very happy with it and had not changed the PCM. The shift points may be a little high for the lower HP engine but you have great bottom end torque. If you are doing city/suburban driving you should be happy. If mosly highway driving it may not be as suitable. Possibly someone saved a link to that thread.
