94 Sts Loud metal to metal clang from under car

Hi guys,

It has been a while since I posted, everthing has been running great on the STS, until last month.

I went over a bump in the raos and got a loud metal to metal clang from under the car seems to be in the middle of the car right hand side. It seems to come from between the front & rear wheels most of the time. Its funny it only seems to happen when the wheels are forced up like over a high spot, not when they drop into a dip.

It seems to come evenly beween the front & rear tire going over the bump, I mean it is just not coming when the front tire or for that matter the rear tire all the time.

I have climbed under and checked all the frame mount and other mounts, I can not see anything loose or bushing fallen off.

Any ideas?

I would look at the exhust system first, like Ranger says. Look to see where might be touching or hiting something an inch or two away.

Then, check the motor mounts. In particular, look at the two links on the top of the engine, and the front motor mount at the bottom of the engine. The two at the bottom rear rarele give prolblems, but never skip something obviousl when you haven't yet found the problem.

Thanks for the input, the heat shield was my first suspect, but it is tight, the exhaust I need to get the car up on Jackstands and so that I can really get under it and see, I would think that with the amount of noise it is making it should be fairly easy to spot.

I am really wondering about the lower motor mount though, does anyone one what to look for on the lower motor mount?

Thanks

Some things to check: The heat shield right behind the manifold. The seam on mine came apart on one side. A large hose clamp fixed it nicely. Another thing to check are the center and rear exhaust hangers. If those are stretched and saggy and you hit a nice bump in a road it would be like a sling shot effect. Someone(s) suggested the catalytic heat shield. I figured you had checked that by now, but that would have been my first guess as well.

Mine did the exact same thing. All it was was one of the little brackets that held the sway bar snug had broken off with age and the swar bar was smacking the underside of the car. I think it cost me like $30 to fix. : ) Def worth taking a look at the length of your sway bars to make sure everything is in order.
