axle shaft

Ok...car goes in Monday for body work...hail damage.

Needed new half shaft. Got the snub out of trans.....bizarre wear pattern. 140K.

Metal transfer on shaft hub. Strange...5 equally spaced spots. Whats going on?

If those are voids could that be a manufacturing defect?

A few years ago I was at a NAPA parts store and they recommended against rotors made in China as they were seeing rotors with voids caused by manufacturing

No...they are high spots. Equally spaced 5 places around the stub. Very strange. Every 72 degress?

I marked the spots with a marker nearby...

That us odd, was it leaking at the seal. Could this 'flange' have been cocking on acceleration causing these rises?

Just curious. Was the CV joint real stiff? Does the number of high spots on the stub equal the number of ball slots in the CV joint?

I'm baffled, but possibly a stiff or realy worn CV joint could have caused the stub shaft to be side loaded at those points, causing the material transfer. :unsure:

What does the bearing in the transmission look like?

I'll bet that the bearing is shot as well.

Here's something more to think about.

Many, many years ago a friend had a Citation. (One of GMs first front drive vehicles) It had a problem of vibration around the 60-70 mph range.

It was still under warranty, however the dealer could not find the problem.

As time went on, it kept getting worse.

One day he was visiting, we decided to check out everything in the front end.

We found the problem.

The drivers side axle was loose going into the trans axle.

The bearing/bushing/case in the trans axle, where the axle enters, was worn and the axle was loose.

At high speeds the axle would bow out at the inner CV joint (run in an elliptical fashion).

This whipping effect caused the vibration.

In seeing the metal transfer on your axle, I would think that the clearance, even with a new axle, would be beyond spec. The seal may prevent any leaks, however, with the additional clearance, you could get some mysterious vibrations.

I think this is exactly whats going on......this car is one of the wiggly ones.

I can pry on the axle snub and it moves....arrrrgggg.

The bearing is not available alone, you have to buy the transmission case extension and then some 'select' bearings for adjusment...

messy work...

Yeah...going in Monday for the hail damage.....$4700.....

Parts guy I know from Cadillac dealer called the other day....the used hood the insurance company 'recommened' also had hail damage....no good....he went ahead and ordered a new DTS (non hood oridiment!) hood.....another 500 on top of the 47.

Fake DTS is getting sneaky.

I'll deal with the trans after the body shop.
