1996 SLS RFA unit (Remote Function Actuator)

Friends,

my 1996 SLS was not equipped with keyless entry from the factory. The previous owner had an aftermarket unit fitted, which was in need of replacement now. I wanted to go OEM and ordered a used RFA unit and two key fobs from the States. Today the stuff arrived, and I installed it in the car. The remotes do work as they are supposed to (doors, trunk lid and fuel door). There are, however, two problems:

- I can not program the RFA unit to switch on the exterior lights upon opening the door. According to my owner's manual this should be possible through the driver information center. I can access the lock functions through the DIC, but when I move on through the menu "storage mode" is displayed.

My car does not have the memory package, does this make the difference, or is there any other reason? I couldn't find anything regarding this subject in the workshop manual...

- The operating range of the transmitters is very limited, I have to point the transmitter towards the rear seat to actuate the locks. When I look into the workshop manual (page 8A-132-0) there are four electrical connections on the unit (A/B/C/D) plus the Antenna input. The four-pin-connector was no problem, it was there in the car, but there was neither antenna lead in the wiring loom nor a connector/socket at the RFA-module. The older 32-pin modules up to 1995 MY had an antenna socket similar to a radio unit, but not this 1996-on thingie. Ideas anyone how to extend the operationg range or how to connect an antenna?

Thanks for any input, with kindest regards from Germany

Stefan

Stefan, I have a 96 and when I open the doors with the remote the lights flash twice and when I lock them it flashes once. You may require a Tech 2 to program this feature, do you have access to a dealer that would have a Tech 2? Maybe Bruce or Logan knows how this feature is programmed..

I will look through the manual regarding the programming. I am glad you got the system to work, very impressive.

With regard to the antenna, I believe you can use a 12 inch wire in the antenna connector for an antenna. If you want, I can go to my scrap yard and get an antenna for you...

I just called my scrap yard he only has a 95 deville in, I will keep my eyes open. Its possible that antenna wire needs to be specific length plus it will have a plug on it, I will keep my eyes open for you and look in my trunk later

Mike,

thanks a lot, you're a great support as always!!

I have removed the module once again today, there's no antenna connector! I've then decided to open it and have a look inside. It is very easy to open, nothing will break doing so. It has an internal antenna, which is printed onto the circuit board! I soldered a 4 ft. self-made antenna wire to this internal antenna, used some epoxy to stabilize the arrangement, drilled a hole into the plastic housing to lead the antenna to the ouside of the module and reinstalled the whole thingie. I then routed the antenna upwards along the C-pillar above the left rear door towards the B-pillar. This is easily done by lifting the liners carefully a little bit.

I did not have my camera with me, but the mobile phone which has one of these cheap built-in cameras. I took a picture of the circuit board with the additional wire put on (beware poor quality!)

The operating range is much better now, so this was a success!

Regarding the lights issue, what you describe is exactly what my module does, the parking lights flash once or twice upon locking or unlocking. There is, however, a description in my German owners handbook which describes an additional feature. According to this description, you may program the unit to switch on the low beam for 20 seconds when unlocking the car. This is achieved by pressing the "INFO" button and the "INFO RESET" button simultanously for some seconds. In the DIC then appears the auto-locking menu, where you chose whether the car locks/unlocks when shifting out of and into park. When pressing "INFO" again, it should change to the menu where you can alter the lighting options. But doing so goes to the "storage mode" - menu. So maybe there is an IPC or PZM option code which has to be set? I've searched thru the workshop manual (love to do so anyway - wife thinks I'm mad reading the manual like a novel book :-D ) but didn't find anything. Well, not soooo important anyway.

Perhaps someone knows more?

Mike once again, many thanks for your help, you're fabulous!

Stefan

Thanks Stefan for the compliments! I realize that you don't have access to parts in good ole Germany as we do here, so as you know if you need anything, I would help as best I can..

My manual sits on my night table and I also read it like a novel! Glad you got better range out of your remote! Make sure the remotes battery is strong... Thanks, Mike

Well, that makes three of us. :D

I'm sure there are others of us out there. Well . . . . sorta sure.

The alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as the result of a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion, or later as a final and total catastrophe of the currency system involved. - Ludwig von Mises
