It's possible that the reservoir seals are just old and hard allowing air to enter. You might be able to change the seals and repair the problem for a lot less than the cost of a new pump.

Can you elaborate on your symptoms. Are you getting the whine at idle without turning? On turns? What is your fluid level? Is the fluid foamy? How is the power assist? Are you losing any fluid? Are you using power steering fluid or tranny fluid? What is the color of the fluid? Do you have a power steering filter under the right side headlight assembly? If you have a leak in your return hose you will suck air and cause a whine (similar to what Kevin said), look for foaminess...

Doubt its a air leak, fluid looks okay no foaming. but this is more grind than whine ( I'm betting the bearings in the pump) the noise use to change or go away when you turned the wheel now its constant....and LOUD and if you put your hand on the pump you can feel it vibrate

I will looked through my manaul. Most noise complaints point to the power steering pump (Pump shaft scored, scored pressure plate, damaged cam ring, rotor or vanes). If I were you I would flush the system before and after I replaced the pump (if you don't find any air ingestion going on), and replace the filter. Here is a photo of the power steering filter, Mike

Consider taking the pump apart and inspecting it for us if you would if you replace it..

is it the pump or the rack? if it's making noise only, then start with taking a turkey baster(sp?) and removing the fluid from the reservoir and adding the correct fluid. if it's something you're feeling through the steering wheel, then it's probably the rack...probably a broken boot which is allowing crap and such into the guts of the rack. i did this job once on an alfa that wouldn't return to center position after going through a turn. i took the rack out and cleaned and relubed it...all was fine thereafter....of course this on a rwd car and it was 20 years ago...don't know what it would be like on a fwd platform. jackg 90seville 99k

You know I will ! :D But you'll have to give me pointers when the time comes to post photo, I still haven't figured that out !

No funny stuff with the wheel, and the fluid is okay but needs to be replaced( I bought it with 28k on the clock and now have 195k) but I'll check the pump shaft and idler before I start buying parts

Thanks, I let everyone know what turns up

I worry that it could be the rack also as jack noted. After you flush the system see how it sounds. I would also take the serp belt off and feel the pump to see if you feel any roughness or looseness in the shaft. Flushing is outlined in the manual.

As jack mentioned, besides the noise, how is the power assist, returnability?

The photos are easy, when and if the time comes at worst you can email them to me and I will post them for you

Well after actually digging into it the Power Steering pump has a whine when cold but the grinding is the A/C clutch. Replaced the idler and tension pulleys since I was there and got the shorter belt to bypass the A/C I'll tackle the clutch when it gets warmer, Got the belt part # off the archives (Sorry Scotty thats why I bugged Ya didn't know if that was for the 4.6 or 4.9) got the belt on, its a LOT quieter, and I need a skin graph on my left arm!

Thanks Guys

Joe, I am sorry, I didnt see your PM to Scotty... I use BodybyFisher now, send mail to me at BodybyFisher and I will get it.. Yes it was the 4.6, glad you quieted it down, Mike

Isn't it amazing how much racket that AC hub will cause? Its a good thing that you by-passed it, here is what it looks like when you don't..

Check out threads by epricedright and speak to him, he is in the process of replacing the AC hub on his Caddy and I think his experience will be helpful to you, Mike

Thinking back, if you look at my posts by scotty on this matter, you will see that I swore it was the power steering pump making noise and it was the AC hub all along, Mike (this is getting confusing, I am talking out of both sides of my mouth.... Scotty won't DIE...) I am sorry I missed this one, but I followed your lead over the power steering pump, and you reacted just as I did when I had the noise, thinking it was the power steering pump when it was the AC hub..., see my experience below......

Look at this thread when I (SCOTTY) started getting the whine, you will see this statement:

http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?sho...c=2068&hl=6K739

I have been having whining, and growling for over a year, and it sounded like it was coming from the power steering pump, well, now I know that the sound can radiate everywhere, as my engine is quite as a mouse, and all whining is gone. I thought all you out there would like to see my experience on this

Its a tough call tracking the noise with the stuff packed in so tight (and AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, ZZ top, Van Halen, and a couple of Iron Maiden Concerts don't help matters.....never stand next to the speakers  ) thats why the only parts I got up front were the pulleys, figured it couldn't hurt . I'll flush the steering and replace the clutch when it gets a little warmer.

Take it Easy Mike

I agree totally, I replaced my AC Compressor, idler wheel, tensioner and put on a new Goodyear Gatorback belt that is suppose to drop accessory noise approximately 10 db and she is nice and quiet....

When she was noisy, I was once at a wedding standing in a valet parking pickup area with a whole bunch of people waiting for their cars and up comes my beautiful car sounding like an EGG BEATER
