#Cadillac Bets on Virtual, Build to Order, Tiered Dealer Features

Buyers walking into a Cadillac dealer in the near future could find an interesting thing on the car lot: nothing.

General Motors Co. ’s luxury division has about three times as many U.S. stores as German luxury auto makers or Toyota Motor Co. ’s Lexus, but sells only about half the volume. Short of steering around rigid state franchise laws and hammering out financial settlements to shutter stores, a plan is being hatched to convert a portion of Cadillac’s 925 stores into virtual dealerships that will be low on overhead and big on sophisticated technology.

That's one reason Cadillac chief Johan de Nysschen would like to do more customer orders -- at least whenever it's feasible inside GM's vast manufacturing enterprise. Beyond helping to expedite deliveries for smaller "virtual" dealers in the future, de Nysschen believes a build-to-order model adds an air of exclusivity and immersion to the customer experience.

"Johan's vision is for the customer to have more of a product-substance conversation in the showroom, rather than talking about terms and conditions and financing," Cadillac spokesman David Caldwell said.

Cadillac's relationship with its dealers is about to get the equivalent of an engine rebuild.

Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen is putting the finishing touches on Project Pinnacle, a program that will overhaul everything from how dealerships interact with customers and how their salespeople dress, to how they present their showrooms and service departments and how they get paid for new-car sales.
