BodybyFisher
OK, today, I was on craigslist and found a 4 month old Sony CDX-GT310, for $35 from a kid that lives nearby, see it here: Sony CDX-GT310 CD Receiver I plan to buy the HD FM unit for it, as my favorite Jazz station just went HD and left me hanging Sony HD FM digital receiver XT-100HD I have replaced my rear speakers with Cerwin Vega 3 way's and my the front door 5 1/4" plus tweeter with a Cerwin Vega component system, and, it sounds like DO DO.... The OEM unit has no highs, the FM has noise, static and is weak, and the AM section is DEAD, and I miss AM. I want to retain my steering wheel controls and have looked at this Crutchfield Steering Wheel Control adapter 1) has anyone been successful in retaining their steering wheel controls using an aftermarket head unit? I am planning on selling this car and think this will improve its marketability and I will enjoy it before I sell it.. Any Ideas? BodybyFisher
I downloaded the installation manual and found this on their web page specifically for the 1992 through 2002 Cadillac 1992 - 2002 Installation of aftermarket radio with steering wheel controls Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
Texas Jim
I lke Cerwin Vega speakers. Everyone's ears are different, but to MY old ears, they have a VERY GOOD sound to them especially if you are driving them with a fair amount of power, to drive the tweeters and woofers properly. Everyone's ears are different, but to MY old ears, they have a VERY GOOD sound to them especially if you are driving them with a fair amount of power, to drive the tweeters and woofers properly. They made an immediate difference when I replaced the OEM speakers, but the OEM unit did not have enough power to drive them. I can't wait to see how they sound with power from a good amp. JasonA
Mike, what are you going to drive after you sell your '96? Jason(2001 STS, White Diamond) "When you turn your car on...does it return the favor?"
BodybyFisher
Mike, what are you going to drive after you sell your '96? Depending on how much I can sell it for, I am going to find an STS. I was in a Cadillac dealer in Virginia Beach last summer to get an actuator for my AC and a salesman walked over and admired my car, they were selling a 96 for $7995 that was not as good as mine. He said they are in demand down there. I would be THRILLED to get $6000, as that would open up a lot for me in terms of an STS.. Paul_tunney@hotmail.com
i think it all really dependson the head unit.... i am not sure about sonys but with my eclipse head unit had a steering wheel control right on the back of the deck, got the 65 dollar module and it works great, i still run the factory bose speaker system in my car, but added 2 - 12" alpine type r subs for a little extra bass, the combination sounds awesome
BodybyFisher
Yes, I'll bet that does sound good. I did not have the BOSE system, I had the base system, it comes with paper cone drivers that had dry rotted and ripped. My son blew one the day I bought it, , trying to see how good the radio was, ouch. CadillacETC1997
wow this is my domain Ok so basically were are you at and what do you want to do? 1994+ Deville has MANY opportunities heres speaker locations in the car a 4x6 speaker in the center of the dash 4 2 inch tweets one in each door (the rear door panels will not have the cut out and speaker grille for this though 4 5 1/4 speakers one in each door again 2 6x9 speakers in the rear deck 95-99 Devilles however are PLAGUED with issues when replacing the stock deck, they are EXTREMELY integrated into the cars Data Class, when you remove the unit you could be hit with part or all of these issues: Battery Drain Loss of Keyless Entry Random Messages and Warning Lights etc... I suggest when you replace the unit, you keep your old one installed, run wires for the power, ground, ignition, and data class wires to the trunk and tap them into the hu there The Twins 1997 ETC & 2003 STS
BodybyFisher
Hmm, now this is scary.. One thing that crossed my mind, is something about the clock, is the clock in the radio or in the PCM? You raise a good issue. I wonder what codes I will cause by doing this. I have to look at the diagram again for adapter for the steering wheel controls, I am thinking that I could get a code from that. Have you guys noticed that when you check the codes, the steering wheel controls stop functioning until restart. If nothing else this will be an interesting exercise, I will make sure that I make this modification reversible, thanks Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
CadillacETC1997
clock presets everything stores in the BCM (body control module) if you unplug your radio and plug it back in all your presets are still saved and same with the time like i said these cars are PRETTY anal if you like i can post a pin out of the 32 pin harness and tell you which ones to tap into and run to the trunk and connect to the stock hu its really not bad, but its a necessary evil to ensure you lose none of the functionality of the car let me know! BodybyFisher
Let me ask you a question, if I retain the OEM radio in the trunk, when I use the steering wheel controls will they still communicate with the OEM radio in the trunk or the SONY? Have you been successful with the adapter to use the steering wheel controls with an aftermarket radio? winterset
In addition to the steering wheel controls, you want to maintain the chimes (which are sent thru the radio as well). As soon as the radio is disconnected, - no more warning chimes. I believe there is an after market product to maintain this function, as well as for the steering wheel functions. You may have a good price on the radio, but maintaining the other stuff is what will cost $$. the wireing for the stock radio in the '96-99 is relatively simple. with the exception of the purple data wire, it's power, and speakers. it's a 32pin connector, but most of the pins are empty from what I recall. I don't see why you will have to maintain the radio in the trunk (for the chimes if you don't purchase the aftermarket replacement). there's nothing more you'll need from the radio. BTW, when the radio is out, you'll get a "not found" for the IRD when you run diagnostics. where when you run it with the factory radio installed, you'll get data values returned.
