P029 (E029) Transaxle Shift 'B' solenoid problem (1st, 3rd, 4th gear)

The Shift B solenoid is the 2-3 shift solenoid. It's located in the lower control valve body assembly and can be changed as part of an ordinary transmission service procedure, which is cleaning out the transmission oil pan, filters, etc. and changing the fluid. In the drawing below the Shift A and Shift B solenoids are on the lower right, labeled "909."

These solenoids aren't expensive, and they are accessible with the car on a lift with the transmission oil pan off. Rock Auto sells them for under $20 each. I don't know if Rock Auto ships internationally. DeSimone Cadillac ships parts internationally and I've dealt with their parts department for years, and they're top notch:

There is a kit that includes both solenoids and a revised support bracket - I would recommend installing the kit vs. replacing just one solenoid.

Frank, the shift solenoids are attached to the lower control valve assembly in the bottom pan (see #909). Unfortunately you need to drop the control valve assembly. Having just done my ISS speed sensor in the side pan, you might want to order the gasket that goes between the control valve assembly and the spacer plate, unless its included with the kit.

NOTE: I believe there are check balls that you have to watch out for, I will find more information out and post it

Yes, there are 4 check balls and somewhere on this forum is a diagram of where they go. I did this some years ago and its messy but not difficult to do. 3 of the 4 balls are obvious as to where they go but the fourth is not, hence the diagram.

Also Frank, both solenoids are the same part.

update:

This link has a good description of the shift solenoid procedure. Between Barry94 and WillieHank there is a boat load of info (although some guy calling himself Scotty started the thread :D ).

http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?sho...amp;hl=solenoid

It looks like the link that barry94 provided to the diagram is dead ... so if no diagram, just take the valve body apart very gingerly and note the position of the balls.... that is until someone posts the diagram ...

Don't worry about the balls Frank, you can put them in place with Vaseline (do you have Vaseline in Germany). I will scan and post a photo for you at some point, I bought a rebuilding manual for the transmission last week.. Mike

Just to clarify about the balls (if I am remembering right), the valve body is a 2 piece (top/bottom) assembly the inside of which is a maze of channels and ports and there are 4 stainless steel balls that have to be in specific places. 3 of those spots are unique so you know that the balls go there, but the fourth ball's location is not identifiable just by looking. So having the diagram is important unless you are lucky enough to separate the valve body without disturbing the balls (not sure that would be possible).

Hello and thank´s for all...

Now, I´ve many questions about the installation from these solenoid !!! :(

1) Can I install the solenoid "A" and "B" without remove the transaxle from the car ?

2) Are these solenoid under the side- or bottom cover from the transaxle ?

3) I´ve the "old" service manual from the 4T60 transaxle and I need the discription

from the "new" 4T80 transaxle to install these solenoid. Can you mail (german_stingray@yahoo.de)

these pages from the automatic transaxle unit repair or where can I found a discription in the www ?

Thank you very very much.

With best wishes from good old Germany ;)

Here is a start (I will send more regarding the check balls):

Lower Control Valve Body Assembly Removal

Remove lower Pan

Use a small screwdriver in order to disconnect the manual valve linkage clip (915).

Use a small screwdriver in order to disconnect the electrical connectors from the following parts:

The 1-2 shift solenoid valve (909)

The 2-3 shift solenoid valve (909)

The automatic transmission fluid pressure manual valve position switch (936)

Remove the wire harness from the two wiring harness clips.

Remove the nine 10 mm bolts (534) from the oil transfer plate (956).

Remove the oil transfer plate (956).

Remove the two 10 mm nuts and the eleven 10 mm bolts from the lower controls assembly. Do not remove the four bolts indicated.

Lift the lower channel plate, control valve body and accumulator assembly from the case as a single unit.

Be sure you have plenty of rags...nothing is as greasy as transmission oil..except from hydraulic oils ;)

I did this on my -93. Just be sure to watch out for the check balls so you don't have to get on all 4 and look for them...

It not a hard or time-consuming work, just messy...

One other thing. Be sure that the gasket(s)? (don't remember if it was only one or more) look fine. It's like a big sheet with some coating on both sides on it. If it peels of, then you must have a new gasket or you'll propably have an internal leak witch you don't wan't. If you're careful then this propably won't be a problem.

I agree with this totally having just pulled my pump and lower control valve assembly from the side pan, the gaskets are brittle from the heat and age, and they stick and crack. You should definately have a gasket on hand that goes between the control valve and the spacer plate.
