I am curious what everyone thinks about this. I feel that when I wash my car it for some unknown reason glides, it feels spry, light, quiet, smooth. I have felt this in other cars also, as far back as my dad's Caddys. Is this just me that feels this way? Mike

Mike, I have noticed this (phenomenon) with every car I have ever owned. As has everyone else I have ever talked to about it. Maybe I can get the government to pop for a couple of million dollars so I can do a study on this.

I was going to respond to your other post (I washed and waxed my car and took it out for about a 25 mile WOT beating. First I want to say that I do believe that 93 octane makes a difference, it is more powerful and snappy) and say it was just because it was washed and waxed.

That's so funny Ranger, I was thinking that there where two reasons she was swooping down the highway, the 93 octane after having used 87 and the wash and wax... she was slippery...

These cars really respond to TLC

I've also noticed if something get's fixed (for instance my navigation wasn't working) it feels like the car rides and drives 100 times better. Then it fades after a few days. Same thing happens when I detail it too. Maybe it's becuase it feels like a whole new car!

Ahh yes, This is deffinetly another performance modification that can be guaged by the "seat of my pants".

Just think what you would feel if you also put air in the tires.

Probably almost indescrible. :o

Yes, I seem to sit it little bit more "square" in the seat after a car wash.

Oh, now I remember: it's those slatted park bench type seats in the car wash waiting area . . . . :P:P:P

Wow, you have park benches in your driveway??? :P;)

Absolutely, the car runs much better after a wash. I just washed the '01 last Thursday after the weekend prior in Florida. Had tons of bugs and salty air grime all over it. The car ran so much better after a bath! :)

it's simple really, the car Appreciates the TLC and it puts it in a better mood....

either that or it's entirely psychological!

Either way I feel it every time!

Had the DTS washed, vacumed and the chrome wheels cleaned today.

While riding around, it made me feel so good I had to stop by Sears and get the Darling Wife a new dishwasher and freezer. :):)

Besides I was tired of washing dishes after our dishwasher quit a couple of weeks ago. :):)

At this point 95% think washing causes the car to feel better!

Odd, huh? What about washing a car could cause that?

I have often theorized that the more hands-on you are with an automobile or other equipment, the more likely you are to feel invested and pride of ownership. I highly recommend washing/waxing your own Cadillac, and doing as much maintenance and minor repair work as you feel comfortable doing for this reason.

There is some truth to this. the suspension, seals, etc get wet. when things are wet, they are better lubricated. When it rains out, our car runs quieter (suspension etc.), but we can't hear it because the outside is noisy with splashing of the wet roads. When we wash the car, it's wet (which is important), and the outside is dry & quiet, so we hear it over the previous day's conditions. Imporved HP is unexplainable though.

I believe using the 80/20 rule 80% of Caddy owners are perfectionists! I live in MN and it is real hard to keep my car clean, a lot of money spent on washes. It makes me cringe when I see a dirty, tire worn, brake dust caked caddy, what kind of person treats his caddy like a beater. I just cleaned my car the other day and the wheels looked awesome :) My wife took it to the store (she did not ask for permission)and it was snowing out.......... She got back and I said " why the heck did you take my car and get all dirty again". She said because it looked so nice and clean. 133,000 miles now and no messages, sweat! I do have the same trunk leak as posted, I will find it and fix it.....I will not drill holes in the floor. When there is something wrong (petty things) with the car it does not run as well !! I even cut back on cleaning it because it is dirty with a nagging problem and needs to be fixed to have "the feeling" you describe. My wife thinks I am sick, :D sounds like I am just normal.

Wives do not understand at all. Cars are tools to them. Growing up women compete with cars for attention from 'boys'. My wife owned a 1986 Corvette and treated it like a beater. It was so bad when we sold it I had no interest in keeping it for myself or my sons, it was a wreck so we sold it for $3000....

MOST women don't understand, it gets them from point A shopping location to point B shopping location and they are only concerned with it does not 'work' and usually ignore any signs that there are problems like the wear sensors on the brake pads

Oh that sqeaking noise, that stopped months ago....but now its GRINDING....

Prior to this thread I'd never given any thought to the dollars I spend keeping my "black hole" of a car clean; I'd always considered it an "incidental" expense.

Adding it up, I now realize it amounts to slightly over $100/month. Ouch! It's no wonder I'm on a first name basis with all the folk at the car wash/detail center. Seems to me I should have my own coffee mug at that place. :D

Just the same, it's nice to know I'm "normal," . . . sort of. :P

With 93% feeling a difference I'd love to know the 7% that don't feel any difference at all!

They're the wives you spoke about in post #15.

Or, maybe they're the "girlie men" Arnold likes to speak about. :P:P:P

I've said this for years with all of the cars I have owned. And the non-car people I have said it to look at me like I'm crazy.

My feeling is that a clean car is a happy car!! And that's the bottom line. OUR CARS ARE HAPPY!! :D

My 2000 DTS is also my first Cadillac. I absolutely love it. I take a large amount of pride in keeping the whole car ,including the chrome wheels, polished and spot free. I also have to vacuum it more than normal. I just like the way it looks when the interior is spotless. I will be putting some leather conditioner on the seats shortly, too. Having it clean just makes it that much nicer. I have viewed it as an investment, and like to keep it as nice as possible. The prior post who says most Cadillac owners are perfectionists is quite accurate, too.

  • 1 year later...

I believe my car respects being highly detailed and clean most of the year. As bizarre as this sounds, I almost feel my car has a fetish for being filthy during the winter! While I try to rinse as much sand/salt/crud off the car and out of the undercarriage weekly during the winter months, I don't feel like the car really minds the elements.

I was driving west in very heavy snows and bad road conditions on the Pike a few weeks back, and caught myself thinking "wow, this car really loves this weather!" Maybe it just handles the elements better than any other non-SUV I've ever owned.

On the flipside, I usually feel REALLY guilty when I have to park the car outside in really cold weather. I've never had a hard time starting it, but I cringe for the first few minutes after starting her up in below-zero temperatures.

But... I can't wait for spring to pressure-wash the wheel-wells, claybar the entire car, and shampoo the rugs!
