95 Eldo, Missing Issue

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I am new to posting here but have been using this forum for a year now to help with issues with my 2 Devilles (sold 1) and the Eldo. I have to say, this is the most informative forum for any vehicle board I have ever been on. A million thanks to all of you.

Anyway, on to my problem. I purchased a 95 Eldorado N* recently with 80K miles. It had a miss in it and the EGR pintle position code came up along with MAP intermittent signal. I changed all plugs and wires, cleaned the EGR and throttle body and spacer along with the tubes feeding the EGR and spacer. Checked and cleaned the MAP sensor also. Now I have no codes coming up but get a miss on acceleration. Not bad but I cant find it. The plugs and wires were the originals. IS there anyway to check the coil packs to see if they are laying down? What else should I be looking at? Thanks

Miss on acceleration is often caused by a bad wire or plug. Despite this stuff is new it could be deffective. Recheck the wires for proper installation as well.

The saddest thing in life is wasted talent

Yes - There is a PCM override in the OBD system, accessible through the AC controls, that allows you to turn off fuel to 1 cylinder at a time. I recently used it on mine to find a bad coil.

Ae you getting a rough idle and strong rotten egg smell from the exhaust?

There is an intermittent rough idle, no bad smell at all. The idle seems worse once the car warms up, but my wife says it has done it while cold also.

Flattery will get you everywhere we love hearing that!

Did you use AC Delco ignition wires? Did you use AC plugs? The AC DELCO wires are impregnated with a substance to stop the boot from sticking and adding dialectic GREASE is not necessary and can cause carbon tracking.... (see photo below from manual)

Yes, new AC plugs and wires but I did use anti-sieze on the plugs and siliconed the wire boots. I will pull them tomorrow and clean them up while checking for any tracking or cracks. I will try to find a gauge to check the FPR also. What is the pressure range needed for fuel pressure?

I think you might have found your problem with the miss, hopefully the grease or crack is the problem. Oddly, I have heard of a lot of cracked plugs, these plugs must be fragile. When I was a kid, it was rare to see a cracked plug. You know what is funny, the fact that the plugs are recessed out of sight makes diagnosing arching at the plugs impossible. The coils put out quite a huge spark, if there is too much grease on the plug, it might help to complete the path to ground. I am not sure if the CAM covers conduct electricity, but if they do, the distance for the spark to travel to ground is not far. I think they are made of magnesium, does anyone know if magnesium conducts electricty?

I can't help with the fuel pressure. But check it with the key on (engine not started), with it idling and then run it up to 1800 and record the PSI. Someone will comment on the proper PSI readings. Also pull the vacuum hose off your FPR and look for fuel with the engine off and then idling and do light revs, any fuel present means its bad.

Good Luck and let us know.

The anti-sieze may be your problem. Just little in the wrong place will cause carbon tracking.

No need for a fuel pressure guage to check the FPR. Just use BBF's proceedure. That said, I think the correct fuel pressure is about 45 psi if you are going to check it.

On another note, has the fuel rail recall been done?

OK, Pulled the plugs and cleaned all of the anti-sieze and silicone from them and the wire boots. Don't know if that was the culprit or that is what caused the problem but I found 2 plugs with cracked porcelain. These plugs were installed less than 2 weeks ago. Maybe i just got to rough with them, who knows. Runs great now, any change and I will let you all know.

Thanks again.

What you found may not have been a crack, but a carbon track. It can be mistaken for a crack and is almost impossible to clean up I am told. Glad it was an easy fix.
