ed blaq
Now that we have had close to 80 degree weather here in Southeast Louisiana this week I am forced to address my AC issues in my 95 SLS. I get the "low freon and a/c compressor shut down message when I try to kick on the cold. Several months ago I attempted to charge the unit but it would not take on any freon. Has anyone else had a similar problem? What was the solution. I am going to take it to a reputable a/c dude but would like to have some info on what others mave have had to do to fix this problem. Any ideas what it should cost to replace the compressor?
cpk
Ed, I'm just speculating because I'm not familiar with your system, but I believe that once the refrigerant level drops below a certain point, you somehow have to override the error to engage the compressor in order to suck the new refrigerant in. Once the low refrigerant is detected, the compressor clutch never engages. I may be wrong. Hopefully someone with more knowledge has better info. If you have a service manual, the info is likely in there or it may be on Alldatadiy.com (for a fee). - Chris
KHE
Have the refrigerant hooked up and ready to go and then clear the code. Start the car and then turn on the A/C - the system should then pull in the refrigerant before the code sets. Brad
Have the refrigerant hooked up and ready to go and then clear the code. Start the car and then turn on the A/C - the system should then pull in the refrigerant before the code sets. If that doesn't work, disconnect the battery and then reconnect. This will clear everything and allow the compressor to kick back on. Lawrence
If it wouldn't charge it was likely just not going in fast enough to notice. With the engine off hook up the charge line (low pressure side ONLY). It should have a blue cap on it. Put the can up side down (liquid discharge) into a bucket of warm to very warm water (just not so hot that you can't hold your hand in it). This should discharge the can into the system, without the engine running. If it doesn't get it all, put the can right side up (gas discharge) and start the engine. Make sure the compressor is running. You may have to refill the bucket with warm water again as the freon will chill it quickly. You should always be able to put freon into the system, even to the point of overcharge. Be careful not to over charge it. Just put enough in to get it blowing cold and no more. Lawrence
BTW, hopefully you don't need a compressor. The cost would be at least $1500.00 installed for a new OEM unit, which is all I would use.
DocFey
GM AC Compressor is around $700 @ GMPartsdirect.com where dealer will want $1,000+. Trouble is getting anyone to put it on as they want to pocket that markup plus charge you labor.

Any ideas what it should cost to replace the compressor? You said that it would not take any freon, how did you attempt to put freon in? When the system is discharged, it needs to be evacuated and it will not take cans. What makes you think it needs a compresser? The system detects low freon pressure and shuts down because of low freon pressure to save itself from damage Ignore all of the statements about the cost of the compresser above, they are way out of line, and I dont know where they get those prices.... Tampa caddy 1998
98-Devill: The compressor is cycling on and off. The temp will not go below 70 it's 90 outside. The high and low side pressures are correct and no Acm codes. I believe this is not correct to cycle like that.
