Please keep us posted.

I am skeptical of the top end cleaner as you did not have the issue before the repair.

If you were burning oil excessively It is highly suggested, although I have not found great success in it, even after being done twice.

I feel for you as I pay pretty good on a rare occasion to have someone do a job for me, Expectations are high but end result may vary.

I wish you the very best

Picked up the car this morning. It started fine at the dealership after sitting all night. Car sat at work from 9am-2pm, then I started it and it acted pretty much the same way it did in the video, but didn't throw a code this time. That's the interesting part. It doesn't always do it 1st thing in the morning, but it basically ALWAYS does it 4+ hrs after that drive cycle.

Talked with the dealership and GM. Basically the dealership is saying as long as it's not throwing codes/lights they want me to drive it because they say it will take putting some miles on it to get the valves to stop sticking. Saying it has to burn the rest of the crud off that the two cleanings loosened up.

I call BS, but GM wants me to take their suggestion for the time being.

Also the dealership made it sound like if it merely throws the code that still won't be enough for them to take additional action. They want a check engine light. We'll debate that more when/if the code comes back.

I guess I'm stuck for now. GM is siding with the dealership's request so unless I can get the Rich code and(/or?) a Check Engine light I get to put up with the rough start after putting $4700 into it.

Pretty frustrated right now. Don't know what else I can do though. Here's hoping I'm wrong and they are right....

EDIT TO ADD:

Also, the service manager kept harping on the sticky valve issue usually being caused by not changing your oil at the recommended intervals (I thought it was a fuel issue?), and implying that since the vehicle had never had an oil change with them then maybe I wasn't keeping up with oil changes. I told him I religiously change my oil when the indicator tells me, and he said they recommend not waiting for the indicator and doing it at 20% - hmmm....I wonder why a SERVICE CENTER would want it done more frequently....hmmm....

If they are telling you to do it more frequently then why have the oil life monitor.

What you describe almost sounds like a leaking injector that is leaking down when the car is parked. Overnight may be long enough to clear the cylinder(s) of the unspent fuel.

No fuel smell in the oil though?

Pull the vacuum hose on your fuel pressure regulator and look for fuel for the hell of it.

So dumb question: do the DI engines have a standard fuel pressure regulator? Because I tired doing some research on it's location and can't even find one listed for this car.

I was going to ask if this was a direct injected engine the other day.  Watch this video.

Actually I've been researched the heck out of DI engines and the issues of valve buildup ever since they started blaming the issue on it. And I just so happened to have already watched that video. GREAT video btw.

Well day three of having the car back and we've thrown codes for both banks again. CEL didn't come on, so we'll see what they say. Waiting on a call back.

Edit/Update: They have agreed to come pick up the car & leave a loaner again. Service Manager is going to be heading up this job this time, so we'll see if that nets me a better result.

Thanks to anyone still following along with this mess...

After watching that video above. The intake valves are only allowing air in and the fuel is directly injected into the cylinder. I am beginning to think that the intake valves are fouled so badly that insufficient air is being allowed in thereby causing a rich mixture.

I also question replacing the injectors now.

Towards the end of the video they show a technician cleaning the valves using crushed Walnut medium to 'sandblast' them. They caution that the intake valves must be closed to stop the crush walnut from getting into the cylinders.

I guess the next thought is, can the heads be removed and reinstalled successfully without damaging the threads in the block. And.... can the rear head be removed without pulling the engine?, fwd correct?

Correct. FWD.

Last time they put me in a 2018 GMC Terrain. This time I'm in a 2018 (Red) XT5 (the successor to my SRX). Hope they're not trying to tell me something... Lol. What an adventure. I'm ready for it to be over.

I am interested in your impressions of the XT5, my wife's Q5 Audi lease is up, I have been looking at it.

Do you know if yours had DI?

If it does then it is very possible. But both banks at the same time...

We've got a road trip (already planned before this mess happened) for this weekend, so I'll report back on it. So far in my short time with it - my initial reactions is it feels NOTHING like the previous generation (SRX). Totally different driving experience. Not sure on it yet. The transmission is a HUGE upgrade from the SRX, you don't even feel it moving through the gears. Seems like it's a bit slow to get moving compared to my SRX, but that might be me getting used to it. Trying to get used to the electronic shifter (although it's WAY better than the 'buttons' that the GMC Terrain had instead of a shifter). This is a base mode, and if I was so inclined to purchase the XT5 I would probably want the Premium Trim level like my SRX had (no heated seats, no sunroof, etc on this XT5). Huge upgrade from the GMC though. I won't be in much of a rush this time to get my car back....lol. I'll try and give a more detailed review when we get back from our trip this weekend. I *DO NOT* like the new deeper red color nearly as much as what they used on my SRX, it's way more maroon than red. If I were to buy one I might go metallic black this time instead of red. Not really in the market right now though. Or at least I hope I'm not....I was planning on having my SRX for at least another 3 years or so. I like no car payments.

By the way, dave, definately look into a catch can once it is running good again.  There was one mentioned in the video above and we recently had a member install a catch can with good results.  Ill find the thread

Ok, here is the thread, see Cowpie's replies.

Halfway through our road trip. I REALLY wish they hadn't given us this vehicle. Is great. It's a dream on the interstate. Overall I'm really enjoying the XT5. Will make a good replacement for the SRX one day. Hopefully far far down the road. No update thus far from the dealer.

Of course while this is all very interesting, I think it's worth noting that two engine cleanings made absolutely no difference in the issue. I sure hope they look at other options at this point. All along I was sceptical of that approach as the current issue occurred directly after their repairs. And yet throws the same codes as the original issue. Should be interesting to see what they come up with next.
