Hitch and Towing

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how hard it would be for me to install a hitch on my DTS? I've heard that they just bolt on now as welding weakened the frame. Also, is it advisable to tow a small uhaul trailer with this car? 900 miles... Any tips?

They bolt on. You car does not have a frame (unibody construction).

Your Owner's Manual should say something about towed weight.

Limit your speed. Drive with the transmission in "3". Weigh and calculate the correct tongue weight (10% of total trailer weight).

Install only a receiver type hitch, or better yet pay to have it installed. In fact, that might the only style available.

You will need a trailer light isolator so to power the trailer lights as the car wiring since the car has LED tail/stop lamps. They are easy to install since the fuse panel is under the back seat - easy to get the wires to the trunk.

If you're towing one of the small, enclosed U-Haul trailers with a single axle, it should not be a problem. The Northstar cars make great tow cars.
