96 dash Info cluster out

Recommended Posts

some of the digital clusters had issues. I dont remember if it was a power supply issue or something similar.

The problem usually starts out by intermittently going out on startup and coming on during trip, and eventually it goes out completely. Is this what yours does or was it always out.

Please take the time to read what BodyByFisher has posted. It is very helpful

Samuel, if you press information, does ANYTHING show up on the bottom of the center like Coolant Temp, the Charging Rate, Timer?   <<<<<The answer to this question is YES?

the answer is no there is no light in the information cluster

OHH, I thought you said YES, because of this reply "the answer to the question was yes to the first one"

So the bottom strip does NOT light up at all when you hit INFORMATION.   That is the DIC or drivers information center.

OK one more test, do this.  On the AC control, HOLD the OFF button and the WARMER button at the same time for about 5 seconds and then let go.

Let me know if anything happens in the DIC

the DIC goes into the search code but no light in the lower part of the cluster but I can see when the light flashes when it get to one that anti lock brake etc.if there is a code like service engine soon I can take it out, when I first torn the key on the normal in the top all the warning lights light up and goes out except the oil and service engine soon, when I start the car the cluster do not light up. my cell no is 202 679 9487

Hi I am sorry about the phone number it is 202 679 9487

Ok, I spoke to Samuel by phone.  He lives in DC.  It was helpful to speak to him to get the details on what is going on

His DIC lights up briefly when the key is turned on then goes blank.  It seems to be intermittent, he said that after he checked the fuse, it lit for 5 minutes then blacked out again.

The digital gas gauge - works

The digital odometer - does not work

The digital trip mileage - does not work

The digital vehicle speed indicator - does not work

When he attempts to go into the diagnostic mode (warmer / off buttons), the DIC does NOT light up, but he can tell its in the diagnostic mode because other things on the dash light up like ABS, etc, but the DIC does not light up.

The lights at the TOP of the center instrument panel work, ABS, SECURITY, CEL, Seatbelts, etc but nothing digital except for the fuel gauge.

My observation without checking the schematic, it is odd that the digital gas gauge works but nothing else digital works unless that is by design, and on a separate circuit.

He has checked fuses, and cleaned some grounds.  I am not sure if he cleaned the correct grounds, I think Samuel implied that he cleaned grounds in the trunk.

The car does not get wet inside, no leaks, no dampness.   This problem happened suddenly.

I would check the following

  1. We are unable to extract the codes, this car should be taken to a dealer to extract ALL powertrain, body, IPC, Chassis and Network codes to start with.
  2. IGN 0 Body 10 Amp Fuse, it is HOT in RUN or OFF, check for corrosion and continuity
  3. Check for Ignition power at A4/C1, see fuse block details, Page 8A-11-0, depending upon console / column shift
  4. Check for Ignition power at A3/C1
  5. Check 20 Amp Cluster fuse for continuity and corrosion, including the socket.
  6. Check ground at S201 and G203, I included the location of these 2 grounds below.

Here is S201

Here is G203

It is possible that this digital cluster may need to be repaired at an authorized GM repair center.  To find one I would call or visit the local Cadillac dealer and speak to the service manager and see if they have any places that they recommend for digital instrument panels.  I had a place I used but they are no longer in business.

I'm curious about the fuse connection and the fuse block itself... could be a coincidence BUT may be a source voltage problem. If all that is good then I'd swap with a known good unit and see what happens. Check E-bay for a replacement maybe..

@OldCadTech does a replacement unit need programming with a tech 2, does the IPC hold the mileage?

I guess installing a used IPC will quickly disclose the current IPC is bad?

The clusters are usually an exchange or you drive without one while they repair the one you send them.

You can get one from a scrap yard but there has to be a mileage certification done. For example, if the cluster I get from ABC scrap yard has 90,000 miles on it and my cluster has 120,000 the certificate remains with the vehicle stating the actual mileage is 30,000 miles more than the indicated mileage.

The Tech2 is not needed for cluster replacement.

Remember that the IPC is the brains of the computers.

I am not sure if you can swap it. Thought not without getting it programmed.

The theft deterrent system is involved also so the car would not likely start.

But on the other hand if you swapped the cluster it should turn on and show info

The cluster is just a display unit.

The 97 Deville has the pelleted key in the column. Security module is not in the cluster.

I could be all wet but I think if anything at all would need to be done, would maybe be a transient voltage battery disconnect and drain. That would tell the other modules that the cluster ID has been changed. I can't think of any programming that would need to be done.

I looked in the 98 Seville book and no programming required for that one either. I missed it if it does. :unsure:

Ok maybe I misunderstood. The IPC has the feature programming. I thought without it the car would not operate.

Good reasoning, I see your thinking, think of it as a computer keyboard in that respect, and a computer monitor in the display aspect.
