lol i wouldnt do that,,,u better ask bodybyfisher hes the man

laugh.gif right after I stick pins in my eyes, that job is a biach... this is a job that you only want to do once for each Northstar you own. Its a good job because you can take care of so much while you do this job.

In the old days, doing a water pump on a 429 caddy was a bear, even worse was doing a heater core, but those jobs were a cake walk compared to a crossover job.

What clips did you get?

You are using a 1/2" drive to put on the 10 mm cover bolts? wowie! Time to buy 3/8" and 1/4" drive metric ratchet sets, I have virtually stopped using my 1/2" drive set unless I do suspension work, given the lack of room.

What happened with the crank sensor connectors, did you find them? It is very important that you carefully waterproof any electrical connections that you make, soldering the joint is important, I love to use heat shrink tubing and bought a heat gun to evenly shrink the tubing but you can use a match (carefully so as not to burn it) and then carefully tape the joint. If the joint is not moisture proof, corrosion can creep up the wiring, raising the resistance and compromising the connection over time. With a crank sensor, and that it is in front of the engine down low, you need to ensure your connection is good and waterproof.

The factory service manual clearly details correct wiring repairs

Where did you get the color scheme for the 4 connectors, the dealer? Do you need confirmation from the manual?

Don't make a mistake that I made once, there is a difference between INCH/POUNDS and FOOT/POUNDS,

1 foot pound = 12 inch pounds, so 89 inch pounds = 7.4 FOOT pounds and most torque wrenches begin at 20 to 30 FOOT pounds

I ended up buying an INCH POUND torque wrench

Be advised that the universal swivel changes the torque reading, try to torque straight on to get an accurate reading

I must have an odd ball torque wrench then cuz mine starts at 5 ft/lbs....but my father also had it since he was my age. Lol.

I'm bookmarking this thread...just in case I ever need to do the dreaded crossover job.ohmy.gif I really hope not though!

OUCH! That'll put a dent in your wallet! Lol.

I'm pretty sure Craftsman made it...but not 100%. It's a beam type one and my dad got it when he worked as a mechanic for Sears delivery trucks a long time ago (20+ years)...the writing is worn off the tag. Heck, the only reason I can still read it at all is because the numbers and marks are etched into the metal. Lol. I think it may have even been red at one point in time....huh.gif It may be old, but the darn thing still works.

And we all appreciate your experience Mike. happy.gif

My wrench has been checked/calibrated 3 times during its life, the last of which was about 2 years ago in my father's machine shop. I really need to find out where he got that thing. It must be pretty good quality if it has already outlived me. I have a clicker one from MAC that I got a few years back...and my brother managed to bend it using it on the suspension of a freight truck. Don't ask me how the heck that happened cuz I have no idea lol.

Steve, glad to hear everything is going well!

Well they go into the upper hose, crush them and use a funnel to put them in the hose on the radiator side. NEVER put them in the TANK, they will muck up the works, and clog the orfice at the purge line. You can put them in right away, I doubt that you will have any leaks. Mix your coolant with distilled water from the grocery store if you can

Look at how much you have learned, you did the job right, took your time and your wallet is heavier as a result

It's better to take your time and get it done right. I'm a firm believer in the saying "If you're not willing to do it right, then don't do it at all."

Good luck, and I hope you don't get caught in the rain! It's been raining here for the last 4 days. mellow.gif

I commend you for taking on such a big job, and you are doing great!
