Good afternoon Gentlemen.

I have a 2002 deville 94,000 miles and doing fine up until my check engine light appeared last week.

It was in need of a tune up so I brought it in to a trusted mechanic. Tune up 489.00. Engine light gave a code for torque converter switch and a transmission code as well. I am assuming those are related. First question is this a known issue? and by the way i am 4000 miles past my warranty. Second question is how much will this cost me. I love my caddy and she loves me. This is the only issue I have had with her. Is it divorce time? Third and final question are there any work arounds for this issue ?

Go to this link, find your year and retrieve and post your codes here

http://www.caddyinfo.com/readingcodes.html

It will be easier for us to help you when we have the codes, your Cadillac has an on board diagnostic system that allows you to retrieve the codes. Its hard to know what issues you have without seeing the codes

....It was in need of a tune up so I brought it in to a trusted mechanic. Tune up 489.00.

Was that high dollar "tune up" more than replacing 8 spark plugs? If you look at the maintenance schedule section of your Owner's Manual you will not find any reference to "tune up" That terminology/concept has been rendered obsolete by unleaded fuel, distributor-less igntion, platimum tipped spark plugs, and digitally controlled engine fuel management (fuel injection) technology.

Engine light gave a code for torque converter switch and a transmission code as well.

What code(s) exactly? We need that information in order to provide any assistance.

There is a torque converter solenoid but no such animal as a torque converter switch.

You can display all Diagnostic Trouble Codes on your Driver Information Center; we need them. Here is how to:

Third and final question are there any work arounds for this issue ?

No way to answer because we don't know what the "issue" is.

Ok guys I have 7 codes here the first set are logged as history.....pbm01713, ddm01714, ipmb1004 pccb1009 now current Pcm po741, pcmp1860, ipmb0429.

I haven't been able to figure out what the pbm01713 and ddm01714 are. Codes normally only have 3-4 numbers in them. What I have found so far:

B1004= Keep Alive Memory

B1009= EEPROM checksum error

P0741= Torque converter clutch system stuck off

P1869= Torque converter clutch PWM solenoid circuit electrical

I also wasn't able to find anything for ipmB0429.

Judging by the 2 current TCC codes, it would seem you were right about there being a problem with the solenoid (or as you referred to, switch).

As for a workaround, I don't think there is one in your case. I know in New York State, your car will not pass an inspection with the check engine light on.

I've heard that the transmission has to be dropped to change the solenoid, but I don't know for certain. I'm sure someone else on here will know.

Well done. You are making excellent progress in systematic diagnosis technique.

Now for a few more guidelines for your model/year of vehicle;

Codes flagged as 'History' are interesting, but not important for the immediate problem.

To take one of your "current" codes as an example. "Pcm po741"; what is relevant about that code is the last 5 characters, or P0741.

The "P" character is specific to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and the four numeric characters (0741) identify a unique "P" problem.

The useful part of that example is the P0741 portion.

The bad news is you have two "P" codes that MIGHT point to a potentially expensive transmission/transaxle repair. The codes are P0741 and P1860. The (possible) good news is the P1860 might be the root cause of both codes and P1860 "could be" corrected by simply addressing a dirty/corroded electrical connector. No guarantee on that point.

Your B0429 code is as common as dirt and has nothing to do with your powertrain symptoms. B codes are "Body" codes and B0429 relates to rear seat HVAC conrol.

If it was me, I would clear all codes and take a 10 mile test drive. Then display the codes again, looking for a consistent display.

Good luck.....

Good morning gentlemen

I cleared the codes last night which made my check engine light go off. I was not unhappy doing that, even if it does come back. I drove 15.6 miles and no light? I have to take my wifes less expensive Chrysler sebring in today for an oil change and brake maintenence. Will keep you Gentlemen up to date. Can anyone give me a range of pricing for this issue?

The problem is that you need to find someone that understands this problem. Many tranny places will immediately talk you into a full rebuild as they dont want to fix what is actually wrong, for fear that they will do the work and that not solve the problem. Some will say its related to the torque converter. As you see from my link above LOGAN solved these two codes (741 and 1860). The parts that you need to get to are located in the side pan. The carriage needs to be tilted to get the side pan off. If you can find a tranny shop familiar with these codes willing to give it a go, I can't see the job costing more than say $500 to $700. I say that because a friend of mine found a mechanic to replace his ISS speed sensor for $400, by a 'garage' mechanic, not a tranny shop. Review Logans post above, Ill post other links to these codes and go to your local tranny shops and mechanics educated and armed with info. Your tranny does not likely need a rebuild. The dealer will want a lot of money to do this job, if they do it at all, lots of dealers sub these jobs out.

That sounds like great news. I will start my search for that type of mechanic. Is this a known issue?

I would say that it is common enough, search the archives, there is LOTS of info, we have been throught this, search P0741 and P1860 separately

Hey There buddy. I cannot tell a lie. I went to 6 different transmission guys and they all said rebuilt or new. The 6 guy I went to was personable and talked to me about the torqe converter and new the codes of the top of his head. I told him i was considering getting rid of it and he gave me a full diagnostic took it out for a test drive. He advised me upfront that if it is the torque converter it would run me about $700 to $1000 and if it is the transmission it run me about $2500.00. Of course i new right then he was telling me what i wanted to hear. But he did take the car for about a week, took everything out advised me I had metal in the pan. Yeah I know horrible sounding words. the point here is he took his time and advised me all the way through. My wife told me to get rid of it and get a new one..... I just got my caddy back total bill $2808.96 this includes an engine mount. If you Love Your caddy like I love mine it will cost ya for this type of repair. Was it worth it yeah i would say so. I also purchased an extended warranty for the the engine and transmission I do plan on keeping it another couple of years and then on to the sts or the cts. Keep in mind that this is the only major repair i have done to the car God willing the last. If i can add any additional advice to cut the cost down I would shop around for a rebuilt transmission myself. Yes more leg work but it will cut cost. take it in and get it really looked at.
