No this can not be done. I was just looking at the Hp ratings and the "9" motor is @ 300hp/ tq 295. The "y" motor is @ 275 hp/ tq 300. Is there a way to may up the 25 ponies lost in a "y" motor? BodybyFisher Posted February 7, 2010 Report Share Posted February 7, 2010 Well truthfully, the 275 HP engine is quicker off the line, the CAM has more low range torque, whereas the 300 HP engine builds power higher in the range, so the 275 HP engine will kick butt off the line and run out of UMPH, and then the 300 HP engine will overtake...futher up the range You probably can add 25 HP by opening up the exhaust system with a more free flow system. The big restriction according to the guru, who was a Northstar Powertrain Engineer who used to frequent this site is the front to rear crossover pipe, if you could find a solution that would help. Bruce Nunnally Posted February 7, 2010 Report Share Posted February 7, 2010 Half the difference in acceleration is the more aggressive final drive ratio also, so 'just' getting the different revving pattern is not a perfect solution. I also agree best to focus on the exhaust system first; it is less expensive to mod than other choices. Yes, I had pointed out to you previously that the choke point in the exhaust system was the crossover pipe and it is the flattened out pipe that you see under the tranny/engine. A full sized pipe would not give enough ground clearance, and there is NO way to bring the pipe up through the engine compartment and back down, as is done in some GM cars. The crossover pipe while flattened out, is widened to allow for flow equivalent to a round pipe. I would not call it a fault, again since the engine puts out 1HP to 1 CU IN, I would call it a necessary compromise. A lot of work went into that I can see. Amazing! I don't think I'd have the patience (or money) to pull something like that off. I'll call the flattened out crossover pipe a necessary compromise as well. I know I'm not about to try changing it. My car has enough problems with ground clearance... The stock transmission is only rated to handle so much power, the last time I spoke to him, his impression was that he had exceeded the transmissions maximum engine torque spec. He had it rebuilt a couple of times and he kept overpowering the clutches. Body.... I have to agree. That crossover pipe is a joke. I know it has to go underneath the engine, but that's ridicoulos. That is something that I"m going to investigate. There were not many options to get the exhaust from the front bank to the rear of the engine. Here is a picture of a 4.9, you see how it was handled there. The STS is what I really wanted. Concours, a bit too much for me. The 600 i'm spending on a 98, that needs very little cosmetic wise.
