I'm removing the power steering pump on my 4.9. I'm having trouble locating all the stuff that needs to be removed. I've been searching on here, but I was a lot better with the old format(and help from BodyByFisher,Ranger,Warren,et al...). Can someone point me to a write up on removing it? thanks.

P.S. It's got a constant groan, but works properly. Would a rebuild be worth trying?

R&R Pump

1) remove serp belt

2) siphon fluid from reservoir

3) removed pressure pipe retainer nut on engine blick to ease removal of the return pipe

4) return line from adapter using special tool J36391 (you can buy this is a good tool store)

5) pump housing bolts, it is not necessary to remove pulley or pressure pipe fitting

6) reposition pump to disengage adapter from pump inlet

7) disengage return pipe from adapter

8) remove adapter from reservoir tubes

Install

1) Be sure all O-rings are properly installed on the adapter, including the port o-ring and seal protector

2) Lube all adapter ports with petroleum jelly

3) Install adapter on return pipe

4) position pump so that the adapter pump inlet tube is positioned in pump inlet. careful of seals

5) install adapter on reservoir tubes

6) install pump mounting bolts and tighten to 18 lbs ft.

7) retainer nut to block

8) install serp belt (now is a good time to replace it if its cracking)

9) fill and bleed system

When I did this job, I broke the adapter removing the pipe and had to buy a new one. I had never experienced a quick disconnect connection before this. The adapter is like a quick disconnect fitting. Scotty had posted photos of the adapter in this thread http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?sho...dapter&st=0

The adapter is a one piece adapter used to transfer power steering fluid from the return pipe to the fluid reservoir and from the reservoir to the pump inlet. The adapter is a molded plastic assembly with attachment points (ports) for the reservoir inlet tube (3/8" adapter), reservoir outlet tube (5/8" diameter), return pipe and pump inlet.

If you need photos, I will scan them. Its an easy but tricky job, especially the first time, remove the housing bolts by going through the pulley. You will need to transfer the pulley to the new pump if I recall, and you will need a remove/install tool for that. My pump just blew a seal and blew steering fluid all over the engine compartment.

Bleed the pump with the engine off, the fluid to the full cold level, jack both front front wheels off the ground and slowly turning the steering wheel lock to lock about ten times, every couple of turns check the fluid and bring back to full cold again. Bring to center, start car, recheck fluid level bring back to full cold. Let car run for two to three minutes. Always used approved steering fluid and not Dexron as we used to do. Mike

When you say you broke the plug do you mean the adapter? I went to the dealer, but that was a while ago, I don't know if they are still available, I would hope they are. I will try to go on line later and post some photos from my desktop. I think I have photos of the adapter on it..

I had a 1991 Seville and I have been driving a 96 Deville for about 3 years. I am hoping to get into an STS one of these days

Okay, Thanks. I'll wait til I see the pic, I may not have broken the "thing" to the point of leaking. lol. This'll get me flamed but, I believe it to be true, and therefore, I don't care. I like the big Caddys. The bigger the better. So, I love your Deville. Your Deville is a luxury car. Good choice. An STS on the other hand, is quick car. It is not however, a fast car. A fast car is 2007 Corvette, Porsche 911S, 1987 Buick Grand National, etc...I suppose there is a nice little niche for the luxury and quick(or maybe kind of fast) car. More power to ya! I'd stick with what you got. I love them.

Sorry, I didnt send the scan of the adapter. I am preoccupied going through a divorce, not fun. Anyway, how did you find getting the adapter disconnected? Mike

I left it on. I slid it off the resev. and up out of the pump. it doesn't look like it's leaking, but pressure hasn't been applied to it yet. I'm off to work. Might do the install tomorrow. Been thru the divorce thing, ouch...

Today I finished the power steering pump. Now that I know what to do, It's not a difficult job. I broke the special adaptor that goes from the pump to the fluid line. $40 from a local dealer. Thank BBF for the help.
