Rear Integraton Module (RIM)

:( Ok.. SO.. I think I have figured out my car problem.> I have an 01 sts and suddenly the interior lights, sunroof, reverse sensors, rear defrost, and cigar lighters are not working.. I have found a TSB related to the rear integration module and my codes are telling me the RIM is unresponsive.. So. I guess the questions are. Does this sound like a fairly accurate diagnosis, where is it located, and is an easy fix? And.. What the heck is a rear integration module?

I have checked all of the fuses front and back, no problems there.

I have started pulling the back seat out, but dont want to pull the entire back apart without knowing the location of the RIM.. I was told today by the dealer it is located behind the rear cushion drivers side. So far I can see what I am assuming to be the amp because it looks like an amp.. Anybody with any clues??

TSB #3357 INTERIOR LAMPS INOPERATIVE AND/OR NO COMMUNICATION WITH THE REAR INTEGRATION MODULE (RIM). *TT (NHTSA ID #10013543, no date provided)

Condition/Concern:

A customer complaint of unwanted alarm activation, Trunk key cylinder hard to open, trunk ajar lamp on, fuel gauge inoperative, RKE inoperative, interior lamps inoperative and/or no communication with the Rear Integration Module (RIM) may be caused by an internally shorted trunk tamper switch.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Disconnect the trunk tamper switch and retest. If the symptoms are gone, replace the trunk tamper switch.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

The alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as the result of a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion, or later as a final and total catastrophe of the currency system involved. - Ludwig von Mises

OK.. So i found the RIM which is the number 3 in the picture. Disconnected both connectors, Tapped it a whole bunch of times and then plugged it back in.. Guess what..Everything is working great again!!!. No codes!!! Now. the next question.. I am guessing it froze up a bit or something. How in the world does one go about snapping the back seat cushion back into place. The metal clips look way too large to fit back into the hole that they came out of.. Is there some trick?

What you did is wipe the connector contacts clean by disconnecting and reconnecting them. Something I advocate as a starting point for many (most) problems.

Since there are no moving parts in the module, it's hard to know what the tapping did other than 'feel good'.

Good job well done.

Thanks for the help Jim!!@ One more thing.. What is the trick for getting the clips back into their spots for the rear upper/back cushion? They dont seem like they want to go back into where they came from..Thanks again!

The 2001 manual simply says to "push firmly."

Regards,

Warren

  • 5 years later...

That would be inside the passenger compartment, behind the rear seat back cushion on the RH side.

HOW DO I REMOVE THE BACK CUSHION?

The lower cushion lifts straight out. Try lifting straight up the front edge of the cushion. Pretty easy to allow access to the battery.

Once the lower cushion is out...you should be able to see some bolts holding the rear seat back.
