Steering Rack

I finally decided to start my own blurb so that my experiences with a high mileage Cadillac could be found in one place. Hopefully others will find it helpful or at the very least amusing. I'll be starting with today and moving onward but at times I'll post previous fixes and experiences as they become relevant.

Ok.....so lately I've been dealing with a floating sensation at high speeds and intermittent vibration felt in the steering wheel as well as the rest of the front end. Noticed a little play in the steering at slow speeds or while parked. I've posted this problem numerous times so I'll get right to it. The new steering rack has arrived and goes in this Monday.

Also I've had this squeaking sound described in Dr. Jay's thread: http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=10902 I just ordered both front end lower spring insulators, just under $9 each. While examining the worn insulator I noticed rust flakes and dust around the repaired (http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=9278&hl=strut) strut bar. Also the crunching sound has returned. The conclusion that I've come to is that the JB Weld was not able to hold up to the tremendous pressure being applied to it as part of the strut bar. I've ordered a new control arm as well ($160) which will be arriving with the insulators. I'll update accordingly.

Got the caddy back tonight with the new steering rack installed. Wow! What a difference. I took it down the highway at 77mph and no vibration and the steering was tight and responsive. Infact the annoying creaking on slow lefts is missing as well. I am very very pleased at the outcome. Now I need to contact Brasington tomorrow morning to cancel the control arm and insulators. It seems that I won't be needing them just yet. I'm excited about driving the caddy again tomorrow. It's like driving a "new" car again. I'll let you know if there are any changes.

Here's a link to some of the problems the new rack solved: http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?sho...opid=85090&
