Heater not putting out heat

hey all my car heater has been bypassed by previous owner.i dont know exactly why. so i took it to professional heating n cooling. they said its goin to cost around $400.i got 2 ??? is it realy cost that much to get hot air out and secondly is it something i could possibly try n do it my self at home... any advice will be appreciated thank you..

first off I think you should be more specific. your topic didnt specify much of anything. heater could mean anything. I am going to assume being you stated bypass. that your heatercore was bad and that the previous owner bypassed itt rather than changing it.

you can definately do it yourself if you have common knowledge of vehicles and common sense. I just did a writeup in thorough on how to do it. I will post it here. the part is about 40.00 on rockauto

writeup for heatercore replacement. with pics.

underhood.

1. disconnect negative battery terminal.

2. partially drain cooling system

3. loosen hoseclamps to heatercore(located at firewall behind the right front strut tower) remove hoses

4. open glove compartment and opem door at rear of compartment, then just remove the clip from the comparment. no need to unplug the plug. it is SIR

5. remove the 6 torx screws (4 facing forward on each side and 2 inside the compartment facing downward)

6. pull compartment insert out with door open and set to toward the center of car. (Be careful as there are 3 plugs on the left side)

7. mark thread on the actuator lever on top of the heaterbox, then remove it by pulling upward on the threated lever (note on the Seville, Eldorado, and console shift Deville there will be 2 actuators, due to the dual zone climate control)

8.unclip programmer from the firewall at the right front corner of the dash by releasing the clip and pulling the unit forward and out. Let it lay on the floor (no need to disconnect it)

9.look at the heaterbox and you will see 2 5.5 mm brass screws, (cant miss them) remove them both and the case splits revealing the heatercore inside.

10. inside the heaterbox there is 2 more brass screws that retain the holding bracket for the heatercore. remove them.

Pull the heatercore toward you till the pipes pull through the firewall, then pull it down and out of the heaterbox.

Installation is reverse of removal, but one important step before you reinstall the glove compartment. Reconnect the Actuator linkage(s) and reconnect the negative battery terminal.

Turn the key on but dont staart the engine. Watch the actuator(s) do 2 full cycles and come to rest. Then test the actuators by raising and lowering the HVAC temps. Once you have verified all is good reinstall the glove compartment.

Reconnect heater hoses, fill and purge the system.

Total job took me 32 minutes. one of the most decent heatercores I have done.

thank you so much for the details info i realy do appreciate that...i am not that very good in mechanical work i think i can certainly try this job as it doent need to many complicted tools.. first of all i will run to advance n get a new heater core .. i will update more tomorrow ...thanks once again i will try not to pay $ 400 for this moment to the professionals...

well did took the heater core out few minutes ago.i see the plastic on the core got crack so iam on my way to buy new heater core..it took me 2 hrs to take it out so iam goin to wait till tomoorrow to put it back.. thanks rock ur pic. did helped me a lot...i will update more tomorrow.

yessss i did it!!! i replaced the heater core n its giving good heat out. it took me another one and half to put it back. bought the heater core for $46... and probably saved $350.... but i still do have a small problem i cant get the air blowing through the 2 vent above the music player. but this problem was there even before i tried to fix the heater. even when the a/c was running before it wont get ne air coming through those 2 vents... is there nething i can do to get this 2 vents working ???? thanks again rock i realy do appreciate ur help n pic it realy made easy for me.....

The heat will come out through the floor ducts. I don't think you can change that on a '94.

You are right on the heat only coming thru the bottom vents...

But he said that back when he was using the AC... no air came thru the two center vents...

I missed the part about the A/C.

There could be a vacuum leak - check the line that goes from the tank that is under the battery tray to make sure it is not broken/worn through.

thanks again i will try to figure out if i can find something... i dont want to take chance as is heater is working good.. thanks again for the help....

I changed my heater core myself when it broke on my DeVille '97. You can check out my thread on that. Post #9 contains a step-by-step write-up on how I did it, and there is also a link in that post to a Picasa web album with pictures (with captions) of the work. There are references to the pictures in the write-up. It may not be exactly the same on a '94 Eldorado as on a '97 DeVille, but if the heater core is behind/below the gloves compartment on your yours also, it should be similar to mine. If it is behind the steering wheel or in the middle, it may be more difficult.
