RockAuto and ACDelco list both as working on my 1995 STS.

Is there any difference between these sets besides the extra 45 bucks for the 748J? I've tried searching a couple forums for answers but have only found other questions, no answers.

I used the 748J last time. I also applied the dielectric grease and now I'm getting a miss and hesitation. Will be doing plugs and wires here soon, and wanted to make sure the cheaper 9748J kit would work.

Thanks guys!

I see the same thing you report; http://parts-catalog.acdelco.com/catalog/catalog_search.php shows both sets as good for your vehicle.

I had the same question a while back, and took a chance on the cheaper wire set. Seems to be the same ac-delco wires as far as I can tell. Car runs fine on the 9748 kit, and visually, they looked the same as the ones that were in there. There MUST be some difference to account for the difference in price and the additional '9' in the part number, I just can't figure out what it is!

And also take a peek on Amazon.com for the parts... I've been finding LOTS of parts that are being sold from closed/liquidated dealers at total give-away prices (even cheaper than RockAuto, who I love!)

Just type the part number right into Amazon... it's sort of surprising what you'll find!

I was wondering if maybe one was a 7mm kit and one was a 9mm kit maybe? Something like that? Since you don't seem to notice a difference I'm going to go with the cheaper kit as well.

Thanks for the info guys!

This question has been asked before with no answer yet. Might try calling A/C Delco. Please post the result if you do. Inquiring minds want to know.

I'm going to order the cheaper 9748J. I have the 748J on the car currently, I will compare them and see if I can notice any difference.

If I can't notice anything I'll see what ACDelco says.

I received my 9748J wire kit today. They were roughly 40 bucks cheaper than the 748J.

The 9748J wire kit is black. It says "ACDelco Premium Silicone 7MM" on the wires.

My 748J wire kit is gray. It also says "ACDelco Premium Silicone 7MM" on the wires.

I'm still waiting on the spark plugs to arrive, hopefully I will be doing the tune up this weekend if they arrive tomorrow. I haven't checked wire length yet, but I will compare them when I do the tune up and report back.

OH. I didn't think that the difference might be COLORS lol

Let's think -- how much more can we charge for 'black'?

My plugs came today. I will be doing the tune-up this weekend, and I'll report back on the wire length of the kits.

On a side note, I will NOT be using the dielectric grease that came with the ignition wires. I have seen recommendations to not use it on this forum, and I suspect that it's the cause of my rough idling and miss that I'm now getting about 17k miles after my last tune-up.

Bruce: so far the only difference I see is the black set is cheaper. I wonder if that's the only difference?

Maybe THAT'S the difference. When I bought the 748J's they did not come with any grease and in fact, said not to use any as the boots where already impregnated with something. They also came with a lifetime warranty.

My 748J kit came with grease. Instructions said to use it, so I did. didn't realize I shouldn't have used it until the deed was done.

The 9748J kit comes with grease also. The box also say there is a lifetime warranty as long as you own the vehicle.

That brings up a good point re: using the dielectric grease. Now I'm not sure if I should use it or not but I'm inclined to not use it. The local caddy and chevy parts and service departments are closed until Monday, and so is the 1800-ACDELCO number, so I'm not sure what to do tomorrow.

EDIT: If I should use the dielectric grease but don't, what would happen?

Well, FWIW I used it as well, THEN saw the notice and wiped it out. I don't think it's THAT big of a deal. Use it sparingly. Can't hurt.

would you recommend just a small application of grease on the ceramic of the spark plugs? I don't want to run into this same issue 15k miles from now.

If you wires are not coated or impregnated from the factory (if they are there should be a notice in the box as I recall), then I would probably use some either on the ceramic or the boot.
