Rear Upper Control Arm Bushing and Knuckle

Recommended Posts

Hi there

I was getting a fair bit of shimmy on the highway and my mechanic discovered that the bushing inside the knuckle for the rear arm control (nearest the wheel) is shot.

He thought he could buy just the bushing but his supplier says it only comes with the knuckle at a price of $935.00!

Can this be true?

If it is true does anyone know of a less expensive approach to solving my problem.

I am talking about my 94 STS here and am worried that if the other bushings are also wearing out and are also in the area of $1000.00 a piece, I may have to think about getting another car.

As always thanks for any advice you can give me.

I think I am looking at the same thing on a 97 deville. Let me know if you find any cheaper fixes. It hurts to have a $15 bushing turn into a $900+ part. BTW the shop that I have been talking to isnt even sure that they can get the part anymore, are you having the same problem?

The local dealer say than can get the part for me albeit at $945.00cdn a piece. I am trying to source it for less money online but not having much luck. If I do I will provide the details.

I am sure that a number of members of this board may know the least expensive way to source these darn knuckles and hopefully they will respond to our request for help.

I had seen on a gm crash parts list where you could get them. MIke (bodybyfishers) maybe he will see this cause he'll remember I'm sure ...

http://www.gmotors.com/ Try here, I replaced mine on a 2000 eldo it was around 480.00 each knuckle, but that is a hell of a lot cheaper than the dealer they wanted almost 1800 to replace both,I replaced them myself took about an hour each side not really a hard job. I almost got rid of my Caddy, I had just bought it and knew it needed tires, had a sway in the rear end that I thought was alignment, took it to the dealer for alighnment and they called saying the knuckles were shot, need brakes on front and back total estimate 2,600.The car had only 56,000 miles, and I owned it for 2 weeks.

I have had this discussion with Regis. This is a ridiculous situation, that you need to buy the entire knuckle assembly for a $10 bushing. I believe that mine are shot also. When I hit bumps at highway speed my rear skipped badly especially on turns. In addition, if I push the rear of my car sideways I can induce a solid noise. I have to get the rear up soon and look it over. I am in Philadelphia right now and it ran great in the way down including being in traffic for about 90 minutes. I think this rear knuckle assembly is an opportunity to make some money if we could find a way to rebuild them or to replace the bushings.. Mike

Hi again

At www.gmpartsdirect.com I found a special order listing for a rear knuckle/bushing unit at a price of $264.86 each plus delivery charge of approximately $63.00 each.

This is expensive but a helluva better deal than $937.00 a piece from a dealer here in Toronto.

The only problem is gmpartsdirect.com does not ship to Canada.

Anyone near the Niagara Falls/Buffalo border that could help me out?

Thanks,

Paul

PS I am going to see if gmpartsdirect.com will send them to me in care of UPS on the US side of the border making it possible for me to bring them back here.

Let us know how you make out with your shipping arrangements to up-state NY. If that cannot be worked out, I might have an viable alternative that we can explore via email.

Do yourself a favor and call and verify that is the proper part, when I ordered mine they shipped me knuckles for about that price but they where for smaller GM cars, had to ship them back and they reshipped proper ones and charged my credit card almost another 400.00 because of price difference. And seeing you are already having shipping problems that could become a nightmare.

That was a extra 400.00 for a set of knuckles, didn't want to get you overly upset.I also cannot see why you can't get them shipped to someone in Upper USand have them mail them across the border.Dealers might have a problem with across the border trade, but I can't see why there would be a problem with citizens doing this

In theory, the borders between Mexico, USA, and Canada do not exist (for automobile parts, at least) since NAFTA.

Reality is another issue for UPS or FEDEX or fill-in-the-blank carriers.

I agree with the shipping issue. I have offered Stefan the same deal. I don't know what export laws are being broken if any, but to me this is like helping a family member, its not like we are running a business or anything.

I was under the impression that knuckles were about $300 per side and I was getting myself prepared to spend that. Its not even that its a difficult install, its really a no brainer with NO special tools required. Amazing. The old Cadillacs used to eat up front upper control arm bushings. I used to regularly, remove the upper control arm and install new bushings with home made tools (sockets, pipes, washers an all thread and nuts) and press the new ones in. The hard part was always getting the old ones out, but with a vice it was done easily. They SHOULD have the same setup with the rear knuckles. Remove the knuckle and replace the bushings. I believe they save money by using an injection mold to form the bushings, as separate bushings would be more expensive to produce. So we suffer that 'cost savings'.

I just rechecked my credit card statments, isn't online banking the best? They originally sent me a set for 207.04 which was 2 of the incorrect ones and then sent me the correct ones and charged my account 414.16 so that may be the correct ones because that comes to around 310.00 each.So you both can breathe a little easier

Canadiancaddy,

Have you tried contacting the Brasington dealer (http://www.gmotors.com) ? I bought a knuckle from them for about $300 (2 years ago) and I believe they will deliver to Canada. You might pay $20 more through them but if you had only one opportunity to buy a part(s) and it had to be absolutely correct the first time then I would go with them. You can even place your order over the phone. Just have your VIN handy.

Hi again

I got the knuckle codes from GM Canada and they are a dead match for those shown on the parts listing at www.gmpartsdirect.com.

They use DHL Express to deliver the parts and DHL does have a depot where I can pick them up which is very close to the border.

The problem is I can't seem to get gmpartsdirect.com to respond to my detailed emails asking them if they can handle supplying my needs in this fashion.

Does anyone have an 800 number for this outfit as I can't seem to find one on their website.

Paul

PS Canada does not apply duties on auto parts from the USA unless they are for foreign (off shore) vehicles.

PSS Thanks for the tip on the Brasington dealer ----- I will check it out

Hi one more time!

Ordered the knuckles from Brasington which they will ship right to my home in Canada.

They seem quite service oriented ------ quick responses both to my phone call and email.

Their quoted price seems a little higher than that of www.gmpartsdirect.com but Brasington does not have an inflated shipping fee ( to cover their handling and website costs ) so in the end both suppliers are very comparable ------- but you can actually talk to live people at Brasington!

Thanks again for the tip Regis!

Paul

Bottom line is one knuckle here was 937.00 or 1874.00 for two plus tax = 2155.00.

My cost for two including everything (shipping, taxes and US/CDN dollar exchange rate) will be 877.00.

The last time I ordered from gmpartsdirect, it took two weeks for the parts to arrive.... They used to be cheaper than Brasingtons (gmotors.com) but when I checked their prices for the parts to replace the headgaskets on my STS, the overall price between the two was within a couple of dollars. I will order my parts from Brasingtons - I'll have them in three days.

This is a good thread, thank you.

You made me nervous with the way you were holding the control arm up there however, please be careful, I know someone that had a DENT in his head from a coil spring!

Good video, thanks!

Cadillac Mike,

I appreciate your concern, but I made certain that everything was stable before putting my head in front of that spring :)

FYI: If you watch very closely, you may notice that the picture of the support under the lower control arm is from the opposite side of the car and was only a mock up later since I forgot to take a picture of that while doing the video.

Dont get me wrong, great video and great tip about the ball joint press, very fast removal.

The jack stand holding the lower control arm looked a little precarious to me thats all.  But I am known as Mr Safety though and wear a belt and suspenders.  I usually remove the knuckle and hammer the bushings out, so this is a timesaver, thx

Thanks for posting.
