1998 Cadillac DeVille base

But I did take it back to the shop and he said it might be lifters. I have chickened out and not let it warm up all the way.. I just think it's gonna blow a piston from my block or something. I haven't started it in like 2 weeks. I was reading something interesting and could it be carbon build up? Just a thought. Again thanks for replying.

that is not carbon buildup. That is metal on metal somewhere.

I would pursue it with the company because it was not doing that before. It may have been run with no oil in it. God only knows what could have happened

The place that did the oil change should be involved in this oil / lifter / rod ( whatever )problem. Way too coincidental it happened after the oil change. Did it make the sound when you started it at the oil change place and drove it home, or was it the next day or several days after?

Good luck getting the oil change place to take any responsibility - they never make any mistakes...

Is this your first oil change since you purchased this car?

Not so fast on blaming the oil change place. We have no idea of what the history is here..

Some people only have the oil changed when the engine starts making a bad noise. I know one lady who did this to a Cadillac....first it was the oil change places fault.....then suddenly it was a bad dealer who sold her a bad car after the oil place had a video of the oil change....*and*...her kid just destroyed a different car after it ran out of oil....

See a pattern?

I don't think anyone is "blaming" them. The coincidence is simply very overwhelming giving the information we have.

They ( the oil change place) need to be informed and involved in the process "early". If the blame lays on them, so be it, if it lays on the owner or the owners children that is the trail that needs to be followed. To come back and surprise blame them after a week or two would not be a logical option.

With the information we are provided with up to this point, we need to start at the oil change place to diagnose the engine noise. The information provided up to this point is highly indicative of an oil filter problem or a engine oil pump. We haven't been able to establish a timeline yet. The OP's first post was an engine stall condition, then it rapidly went to an engine noise that started "after the oil change". We're trying to ( at least I am ) gather enough information to determine when, where, what, how.

This is exactly like programming a computer data base - garbage in = garbage out. Still trying to sort the data from the garbage.

By asking, is this the first oil change since you have this car, I was thinking that the previous owner might have used a very thick oil and masked the knock, once the oil was changed to the proper oil, the knock became loud.

I have been asking the OP to stop by, the problem is we are not getting definitive information about the problem.

I would like to know the following to focus this better

  1. Was the engine EVER run with the oil light on, it had a P1189, which could interfere with the oil light operation.    The problem is, the engine could have in reality had low oil pressure and the light was ignored because it was thought to be a false code problem.  Was the engine EVER run with the low oil pressure light on?
  2. Was this the first time the oil was changed since the car was owned?
  3. Where was the oil changed?  Was it changed in a JiffyLube type of place or a repair shop?
  4. Do you know what kind/viscosity of oil and filter was used?
  5. Did you wait for the oil change or did you leave it?
  6. Did the engine make the noise BEFORE the oil was changed?
  7. Did the engine make the noise immediately after the oil change was done?
  8. When did you first hear the noise?
  9. Does the noise go away after the engine is fully warmed up?
  10. If you rev the engine up to 2,000 rpm what does the noise do, link me to a video of the engine revving to 2,000 rpm if you can
  11. Was the engine have been driven abusively?, winding it out to 6,000 rpm at any point?

Please quote my post here and try to answer each question so we can more understand what is going on, Thanks

so I let my caddy warm up all the way to 190 degrees! the noise is still there but seemed calmer than first start up! I put the caddy in reverse and when I went to step on the gas it seemed like it was chugging and the noise became more rapid! same thing in drive! I didn't bury my foot on the throttle just a little push!

Do you know if the noise goes away above idle?

The noise seems to soften after idle but still makes the noise and I did a test drive and the noise because becomes more rapid after pushing the gas but once going it goes back to that noise!

Last month you said you were going to change the oil, change the oil to 10W30 non synthetic and see what happens.  As you mentioned this morning on messenger, you think that 5W20 may have been used.
