mike5plus5
This is on my 2003 base Deville. My battery light came on and I got a "battery not charging" message during a 125 mile drive today. It was intermittent at first but now it is constant. I stopped and checked voltage with DVOM which showed the same as the information center - 11.8 volts with engine running. I'm assuming this is an alternator gone bad and I plan to buy one tomorrow for $127.99 but I wanted to ask if there is anything else (like maybe a fuse) that I should check first. I pulled the DTC's after I got home, then cleared the codes, then started it and ran it for about 3-4 minutes, then pulled the codes again. DTC's when I got home were: NO ABS DATA NO AMP CODES NO DDM CODES NO DDS CODES NO DIM CODES IPC U1000 Class 2 Communication Malfunction - CURRENT IPC U1088 Loss of Communications with SDM - HISTORY IPM B0419 Air Mix Door #2 Range Error - HISTORY IPM B0429 Temperature Control #3 Rear Circuit Range/Performance - CURRENT NO IRC CODES NO LRD CODES PCM P0442 Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System Small Leak Detected - HISTORY PCM P0621 Generator L-Terminal Circuit - HISTORY PCM P0622 Generator F-Terminal Circuit - HISTORY PCM P0741 TCC System Stuck Off - CURRENT PCM P1571 Traction Control Torque Request Circuit - CURRENT PCM P1634 Ignition 1 Switch Circuit - HISTORY PCM P1860 TCC PWM Solenoid Circuit Electrical - CURRENT PCM U1040 Loss of Class 2 Communications with ABS - CURRENT NO PDM CODES RCC B1009 EEPROM Checksum Error - HISTORY RCC U1000 Class 2 Communication Malfunction - HISTORY RIM C0660 Level Control Exhaust Valve Circuit Malfunction - CURRENT NO RRD CODES SDM U1000 Class 2 Communication Malfunction - CURRENT NO VTD CODES _________________________ DTC's after clearing codes then running for 3-4 minutes are: NO ABS DATA NO AMP CODES NO DDM CODES NO DDS CODES NO DIM CODES IPC U1000 Class 2 Communication Malfunction - CURRENT IPM B0429 Temperature Control #3 Rear Circuit Range/Performance - CURRENT IRC U1016 Loss of Class 2 Communication with VCM - HISTORY NO LRD CODES PCM P0621 Generator L-Terminal Circuit - HISTORY PCM P1571 Traction Control Torque Request Circuit - CURRENT PCM U1040 Loss of Class 2 Communications with ABS - CURRENT NO PDM CODES NO RCC CODES NO RFA CODES RIM C0660 Level Control Exhaust Valve Circuit Malfunction - CURRENT NO RRD CODES SDM U1000 Class 2 Communication Malfunction - CURRENT NO VTD CODES __________________________________ I know this is a bunch of codes and I'm trying to save the money to buy another EBCM and replace the TCC solenoid but I'm low on money and mainly just need to get the battery charging right now. Thanks for any help! Mike
BodybyFisher
Many of these codes.could be caused by the power issue you are having. Typically this is an alternator problem. Make sure you buy an ac delco reman unit, dont buy the cheap autozone or pep boys lifetime units. OldCadTech
I agree with @BodybyFisher, If you plan on doing this DIY - I think the radiator has to come out and the condensor unit which means purge and charge A/C.... Someone will chime in if I'm wrong.... THERE IS ALWAYS ENOUGH TIME TO DO THE JOB RIGHT - THERE IS NEVER ENOUGH TIME TO DO THE JOB AGAIN !!! BodybyFisher
I have done this job taking the wheel well inspection cover off and the lower panel off on the bottom behind the radiator support. It is not necessary to remove the radiator, BUT, put a 2 by 2 foot piece of 1/4 inch plywood in front of the radiator to avoid damaging it by dropping the alternator into it. Use a 1/2" breaker bar to relieve pressure on the tensioner to remove the serp belt. mike5plus5
I replaced it today with a Delco reman unit which took me about 3 1/2 hrs, which is a little less than what the book gives according to Alldata. I've got a prosthetic left arm with a hook which doesn't have a good grip so I did remove the radiator to be safe but there was plenty of room without removing the condenser. Actually, as tight as it is in there, I would probably rather remove the radiator if I had 2 good hands . Overall it was a straight-forward job without any hard to access bolts etc. other than the bottom transmission cooling line being a little tight to get to. So I'm mobile again and happy for now. Thanks for the help everyone!
