HELP! ENGINE LIGHT RESET

My engine light stays on for about 7-800 miles and then shuts off. I can drive for 70-80 miles and the light comes on again,  This happens repeatedly. . The car runs beautifully and I believe would pass smog if it weren't for scope saying code pending. I believe when the light goes off by itself without mechanic clearing it,  I should be able to sneak in for a quick smog pass before any  "pending code" displays itself.  I am waiting patiently for the light to go off by itself and "RESET" itself.  I understand there is a hack to trick the car and get it to go off, as it would naturally.  This is my first time to your forum, and any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!

Look in my signiture on how to chexk for.codes and post them here.  It.may be something.simple.

In addition, codes and be.set and if you dont fix.them you can do more damage like burn out your cats.     The light is not just an annoyance to deal with.  Post your codes

This is a 2005 xlr.  You will need to have the codes checked

the code is P9052 , the car is not sluggish at all. I intend on replacing cat. for now I need to pass smog first and believe I will after a natural reset.

there are driving patterns I'm told that can expedite the light out at a quicker rate? that was the question. Any knowledge of such would be appreciated .

Ok so you posted here too, and you say you need a CAT in this thread.   How do you know you need a cat, are you getting a code?, or is it physically damaged?

Where did you get the P9052 code I am unable to find this code, my search produced your post on the xlr forum, are you sure about that code?

You are looking for an easy way out, if you have a current code setting a check engine light, it WON'T go out until the problem is fixed.   If you disconnect the battery to delete a code, your system will not be ready for inspection until you complete a drive cycle, at which point if you have a current code it will set again.

We need to know the EXACT codes you have, the P9052, is not familiar, I have the 2005 XLR service manual and it does not show.

John, is it the same as the drive cycle to get the system ready for inspection where all.tests are done?

This is a generic drive cycle - often times the drive cycle would have to be repeated ESP on some imports, I know it is not an import but sometimes it works !

This is from the days I worked in an independent shop. Came from ALL-DATA I think.... It is a generic OBD2 operation anyway

------->> Note the IAT (Intake Air) value during engine startup. The driving time must be adjusted during step “a” based upon IAT (Intake Air) value at startup.

a. Drive the vehicle at 40 – 55 mph (64 – 88 km/h) for the time described below:

If IAT (Intake Air) was less than 50F (10C) when the engine was started, drive for 7 minutes.

If IAT (Intake Air) was greater than 50F (10C) when the engine was started, drive for 3 minutes.

b. Drive the vehicle at 35 – 45 mph (56 – 72 km/h) for approximately 7 minutes.

NOTE: A lot of this is assuming you have access to some form of a scan tool to monitor the status.

Drive with smooth throttle operation. 

Avoid sudden acceleration. Avoid sudden deceleration as much as possible with the throttle fully closed.

If readiness status does not switch to “ready” ensure preconditions are met, turn the

ignition OFF, then repeat steps “a” and “b.”

 

If there is an exhaust leak the cat may not be getting hot enough during the drive cycle. Add a little trans fluid to the intake and check for leaks.

It could be an O2 sensor problem or O2 sensor wiring.

Could be an IAT temp problem

Is the AIR system operating? it is designed to help "light" the cat.

It will be almost impossible to do without a scan tool though to observe the status indicators..
