96 Seville temperature gauge reset?

Good morning everyone.  I own a 96 seville sls, 4.6l. I have had some over heating  issues  in the recent past and I noticed something odd this morning.  I haven driven the car all weekend from Friday at about  6:00 pm until today Tuesday.  When I started the car the DIC indicated that the car was already at 77°. Is that normal? If not what should I do first?

Well the car's temperature when it cools off will drop to the ambient temps.  What is your outside temp?  Sounds normal to me.

Your Seville has digital readout for coolant temp? That is a setting that has to be changed to get it.

The car takes several days to drop to ambient temperature, particularly if it is garaged and not subject to winds.  71 F after resting for a weekend is normal, if it is a few degrees warmer than the garage.

In addition, if there was a problem with your ECT sensor being out of range, you would set a code.

These are the types of codes the ECT could set if the system detected a problem:

  • DTC P0115 Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Circuit
  • DTC P0116 Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Performance
  • DTC P0117 Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Circuit Low Voltage
  • DTC P0118 Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Circuit High Voltage
  • DTC P0119 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Intermittent

If it sits outside, then it may read the outside temperature after sitting overnight.  It's hard to say what it will read, because in the coolest part of the evening just before dawn, the car may cool to the point that it will actually be cooler than the outside temperature by 7:30 AM.
