I do have a p0741 dtc code , which after reading scares me because I jist spent 3500$ on the car but I cannot notice anything that seems wrong with it should this be a different post ?  I want to try and handle this as soon as possible as I was planning on keeping my new car for some time . What would be the best thing to start doing to check this or fix this ? I read that it can be as simple as tcc solenoid replacement , which I have never done , so how simple this is , is relative . But from what I understand it would mean I wouldn't have to replace the entire transmission which I found can also be another 3000$. Again after the repairs it seems to run beautifully . I drove it from Dallas to Austin and only used about half a tank of gas .

Do a search on P0741 - there is a ton of information in the archives.  If only the P0741 code is set, there is an issue internally to the trans where the seals in the torque converter lock up apply circuit are leaking and not allowing the torque converter to lock up.  If the P1860 code is also set, that code is causing the P0741 code and needs to be diagnosed first - most times, it is the TCC solenoid behind the trans. side pan that it bad.  Some have replaced this without removing the trans. from the car.

If the P0741 issue is in its infancy, you should be able to clear the codes and it should take several days for it to come back.  That should allow you to obtain your inspection. As time goes on, the P0741 issue will cause the torque converter to run hot and eventually, the clutches internal to the torque converter will start to come apart.  That happened to my '97 STS and I installed a used transmission since the debris from the torque converter was all through the transmission.  I have a thread posted on that project from three years ago.

Here is a very good teardown of the 4T80E transission, he discusses the TCC solenoid and shows reasons for the P0741 code

Is it possible to replace the seals and and replace the tcc solenoid without dripping the engine . I have watched videos where they open up the transmission with about a fingers worth of space and replace the solenoid but can the seals be replaced the same way. Also I talked to someone who said the job would be 800$ . Does this sound right , or would that just be for the solenoid replacement?I think I might have made a mistake and the code is just p0741 possibly not triggered by the p1860 . If this is the case will it mean a much more expensive fix . I have access to 2 donor cars . If I just replace the solenoid that won't fix the problem will it . Or is it just a twmporary patch. I erased the codes and nothing has come up today and I drove over 50 miles . I was reading that highway driving might be bad ,but I have not noticed anything wrong with the car . I really want to fix it regardless of the case . If I can get the transmission from the salvage yard it only has about 60k miles on it . Or should I try the solenoid replacement first . Also when I replace it what else can I replace to help fix the problem?

The problem is that the torque converter should be replaced

Those 2 seals require the channel plate to be removed, and that can be done with the tranny in the car, but to replace the converter the tranny has to.come out

If the P1860 code is not set and it is just the P0741, replacing the solenoid will NOT fix the problem.  Many times the so-called shortcuts are more work than pulling the transmission.

It sounds like your trans is in the early stage of the P0741 failure so it would be reparable.  The only reason I replaced my transmission was the torque converter clutches were disintegrating and the debris was circulated in the trans.

Hey @KHE can you link to your tranny job?, I don't think I ever saw it.

@Ben ATX you cover a lot of options, I really like the tranny at the scrap yard with 60K miles of that is a good number.  You could have  a reputable shop replace the solenoids, filters, seals and torque converter.

Make sure you get the correct tranny.  The STS, ETC and Concours with the Vin 9, 300 hp engine have a 3:71 final drive whereas the base model with the Vin Y, 275 hp engine has a 3:11 final drive.  The PCM will be balk at the wrong gear ratio.

Is the torque converter part of the tyranny or something different . Also when I got my head gaskets fixed and the engine crankcase resealed would they have noticed the sediment in the oil pan when taking the engine apart and putting it back together or not ?

No way can the trans. be disassembled to replace the TCC lockup seals without removing the trans. from the car.  If it were just the solenoid, that can be replaced with the trans. in the car.

Typically, headgasket replacement does not involve removing the oil pan.  You would need to look at your paperwork to see if they re-sealed the engine which would have involved removing the oil pan.

It is probably best to start a new thread with the transmission discussion since this thread's title is AC hot air.

The rear main crank case was resealed. One thing I haven't done is check to see if the fluid is low . Would the fluid being low or the fluid leaking throw this code. I will start a new thread after this . Sorry. Also was wondering if the torque converter was cheaper to have fixed than having the transmission rebuilt . Also since it's in the early stages . I read it can be 4000$ . But if not completely destroyed could be a 800 to 1200 dollar repair.but yes I did pay to have it resealed while the engine was out .

Kevin, according to that video, the two seals are in the channel plate.  When I saw that video, I was kicking myself for not replacing those seals when I did my ISS speed sensor.

Are those the seals?  I will look at the video I linked to above, 4T80E teardown, to see the time of his statement on the seals and give you the time.

The big problem is the torque converter which I would want to change due to the slippage it experienced

Good point on the new thread Kevin.  I have to request from Bruce authorization to do those types of changes, I had that capability at some point.

The torque converter sits between the engine and transmission.

Also starting today I noticed a small puddle of water when I stopped at three different places today  it is coming from the center under the engine , in between the driver and passenger side . Not just a drip , but a small puddle . I do not have access at this point yet . Where could this water come from?

The air conditioner will drip heavily on days like this.  Leaving big puddles as water condenses warm air at the evaporator.

Is it coming from behind the passenger wheel about 2 feet in?

Is it clear water or green/yellow coolant?

It is just clear water . I checked every time i,stopped the car , but I don't have the ac recharged yet so it hasn't been running . However I did erase the codes and heard a noise from behind the dash when I did , don't know if that means anything. But I have not been running the ac .

So I have erased the codes and it's been about 2 days and the check engine light is still off. I am.not sure how they do inspections here in texas but if the check engine light is off will they just use an obt2 scanner to check those codes . Or am I in the clear for this time with the check engine light off?

Keep an eye on that water, I forgot that your AC wasn't working.  Maybe your evaporator is draining water, obviously coolant would have a color and smell.

Well they will attach a computer connection to the diagnostic connector under the dash.  If you have driven two days, your diagnostic system should have performed all tests and should be ready.

Have you driven the car locally and at highway speeds?  Your system needs to go through a drive cycle to be READY for the state's test.

Yes I have tried erasing the codes twice I went 3 days the first time then ran the codes and the check engine light came back on . When I run the dtc codes after they have been cleared will they indicate they are not ready I imagine if I erase them aand the check engine light doesn't come on after a day or two and I drive on the highway every day I would assume that it would be ready , but I'm just not sure .
