96 deville: where to hook engine for right transmisison mount replacement?

Recommended Posts

The passenger side transmission mount on my 96 deville is shot (obvious from visual inspection). I am considering getting an engine support bar (rests on the strut towers and hooks on to the top of the engine). FSM calls it out in the R/R procedure, but is not clear exactly where to pull up on the engine to raise the right transmission mount area.

There are two hooks (front, rear) on the driver's side of the engine, and there is a hook where the passenger side dog bone attaches, but I don't see any attachment at the right rear of the engine. How can I pull up the right rear of the engine to get the transmission mount unloaded?

Thanks for your help!

I just recently removed that mount.. it has three bolts connecting it to the transmission, two nuts connecting it to the.rubber mount you need.to.change and two nuts connect it to the frame.

I disconnected the right dogbone.

I simply used a bottle jack to jack up the output shaft on the transmission close to the where the bolts are to minimize stress on the tail.

Your support can also support the right side weight.

Be very careful not to raise the engine too high so as to accidently dislodge the inner CV joint on the right axle.

Seriously consider removing the axle.  That is probably unnecessary, but be extremely careful not to accidently raise the engine too high to dislodge the inner joint raise only as high as necessary.

Use a secondary support for safety.

Here is a photo of the area on a 95.

Thank you for your description - this looks like a good way to go.

I don't understand this part of your comment - could you please explain?

As to using a secondary support (e.g., jack stand), where can I put it (presumably under some part of the transmission) such that it won't do any damage?

Could I also jack the right wheel (perhaps under the lower control arm) to keep this from coming apart?

Oh sorry,  you are working in a tight area, I was concerned that supporting the tranny tail shaft with a bottle jack can slip, so if you have a secondary support it would be good.  Your jack/ holding jig can provide a secondary support. I didnt have a secondary support, and risked the bottle jack slipping, I dont want you to risk that. I hope that is clearer.

I jacked the body up at the jacking point with a floor jack and removed the wheel.

I don't think jacking it under the wheel lower control arm would make any difference, you still need separation between the engine and frame.

Do not jack more than you need to.  Remove the bolts and nuts and jockey it out, its a right fit.

I'm thinking maybe I can get a floor jack in there under the transmission near the mount, with a small piece of 2x4 between the jack and the transmission. I'll have to raise the car again and try it out. (I'm trying to ensure i have a workable plan before I order the mount - looks like $140 or more for the GM part). Thanks for the info!

That is how I do it. Mount is cake to replace. Tip it out and tip the new one in. It goes in much easier. And you dont have to raise it so high. Holes are slotted to allow this. The only one that sucks is the front one by the radiator. Dead center under the manifold

Rock, you had me go back and check the original post.

I think he is talking about the passenger side mount.  Unless I have misread this

also cake though. Even easier.

I put jack with 2x6 or similar and jack carefully under the oil pan. It doesnt have to go up alot so it should not hurt anything

I didn't find it easy on the 95, and found it had to go up a lot, as I mentioned I removed the dog bone and felt it was so high that I risked dislodging the inner CV joint.   I jacked on the output shaft housing though up near where it bolts to the tranny body, I wanted to be near the strongest point for jacking.

You probably lifted higher from the pan whereas I was tilting toward the drivers side.  But I am always reluctant to use the pan to jack with even with a load spreader like the 2 by 6.  The NS pan is a cast piece and I saw the scrap yard easily crack one sliding it off a flat bed and letting it drop about an inch, instant oil all over the ground.  Since then I have been more careful.  But I think your direct lift, got you higher faster and easier than jacking from the tail.
