The ONLY thing I have to say is this, up until recently, at 100,000 miles most cars were sent to the junk yard. IF in fact these cars are running into trouble around 100,000 miles, I say.... so what. Most of the time, the remainder of the vehicle is in good condition, and either having the head gaskets done or doing them yourself (not an option for many), provides you with a good car. For me, I am looking for a newer NS that HAS a headgasket problem so that I can fix it and have a good car afterward. Has GM improved the design over the years yes, I believe it has (dexcool, redesigned head gaskets, time-sert repairs and longer and more hearty bolts). Just remember that at 100,000 miles most cars in the 50's through 80's were junk.

96 STS 120,001 mi. I'll be putting timeserts in during head gasket replacement next week. Last week on a trip to Fl. I started overheating and blowing coolant. I called my brother and he came and rescued me with his trailer. Who says Cadillac aren't exciting. Anyway the cars gettin older, I've allways had it to the floor, and its never let me down. I'm just suprised it took this long the way I drive.

I am finishing up the timesert process on my 1995 STS. It has been a

slow process since I can only work on it over the weekend when the

weather is nice.

It has about 114,000 miles and the people a bought it from were nice

enough to let me know that it needed headgaskets before I bought it.

It is my 1st Cadillac and I really like the car so I hope the timesert

process will fix the overheating problem.

I got it at a good price. I will report back, when I get it installed and tested.

Definately report back your timesert job we are all interested in how it goes. We have a wall of FAME of members who timesert their engines that you will need to be included in! Start a new thread and post photos if you can. Mike

wow,

Ive never heard of such a thing as timeserting. I must be new.. lol

I've had 5 cadillacs and I have never had to have this done but only the last two have had the Northstar. I do belong to several other forms and in the short time I have been a member I have learned more on here than the other!

Timeserts are the only thread repair products that will successfully repair Northstar headbolt holes. I will be doing that job on my '97 STS in a couple of weeks.

I will take plenty of photos. In the back of my mind, I am hoping it is a plugged return line to the surge tank or a frozen waterpump belt tensioner....

Imagine how cool that would be? You can make that determination really quickly, I would purchase one of those kits that detects combustion gases in the coolant so you can cut to the chase real quickly when you get it to the motel on the way home.... Here is that kit:

Here is the manufacturer with a better description:

I doubt it's as simple as a stuck waterpump tensioner or plugged line to the surge tank but it would be unbelievable it it was. I've never used a kit like that before - I may try it if the spark plug air adapter is inconclusive. I have one just about finished on my bench.

The troubleshooting will commence Friday evening....Stay tuned.

redhot, make sure you changed your coolant by now. It needs to be changed at 5 years or 100,000 miles, Mike

1994 STS had 164000 when it was wrecked and totaled. No engine gasket problems.

1995 STS 135,000 ... still driving it no gasket problems no time serts, has an engine oil leak

1997 Eldorado My sons car under 90,000 needs head gaskets and time serts-- Will be doing it ourselves.

Fourth Cadillac in the family and the first one to need this type of repair. It had to be my sons first car. He works at Walmart to pay for it and has not been able to drive it for 2 months now.

to my knowledge my 98' deville has not been time-serted and hasn't had head gasket problems.

Just under 90,000 and coolant change was done (with the proper tablets and precedure) just a a week or so ago. Not sure if first time or not but the coolant that came out "looked" still like it was ok just darker and some lumps.

The Green's Machines

1998 Deville - high mileage, keeps on going, custom cat-back exhaust

2003 Seville - stock low mileage goodness!

2004 Grand Prix GTP CompG - Smaller supercharger pulley, Ported Exhaust Manifolds, Dyno tune, etc

1998 Firebird Formula - 408 LQ9 Stroker motor swap and all sorts of go fast stuff

I need to change my vote. My 1997 ETC was recently diagnosed with head leakage by means of a pressure test of the cooling system. When the engine was out for replacement with a remanufactured replacement engine, the mechanic showed me where coolant had been seeping out the left rear corner. Technically, I replaced the engine and didn't timesert it, but the remanufaturer will when he uses the core.

1997 ETC -- Yes (change my vote from 2004 or 2005)

Mileage 116,600

From posts here, I am sure that the root cause is not changing the coolant for seven years. I'm going to three-year coolant changes from now on.
