BodybyFisher
I needed a new starter for a 98 Eldorado and planned to get an AC Delco rebuild, it was $128, the only rebuild I would normally use is an AC Delco or one by a reputable rebuilder, but my rebuilder Montrose in Babylon, NY went out of business. My friend told me to use Genco Rebuilders, a local firm as he has used them for 25 years and he has vintage starters, generators and alternators rebuilt. I called the company and found that they were bought out by BBB Industries. He insisted that I use them and I called an ordered a NS starter, $110. I was very impressed with their operation and especially with the detailed testing that they did, that ensured that the motor performed well. I know that shipping can push the price of a unit out of consideration but you might try and see if they have a local distributor. Here is the Northstar starter motor test that they performed and their contact numbers and web page info to find a local distributor. James Woods
I'm lucky, here in Columbus Ohio we have a great rebuild that's local. I've always had then rebuild my own part instead of taking one off the shelf. Just dwells better to me too know I am getting my original part back, off close it's been tanked and cleaned. Normally I drop off in the morning and pick up later that day. I like that they replace all parts that wear, not just what went bad. I've heard that AutoZone and other stores only remove what was bad plus bearings. The last northstar alternator I had rebuilt it was about $75. The company is Hite Parts exchange. They also sell parts if you want to rebuild your own. Not sure if they do mail order rebuild bit for site they do sell the parts. Highly recommended. BodybyFisher
I agree I had a shop that rebuilt my alternators but they went out of business. Need to find a new shop. But I was very impressed with the testing BBB did and they were very familiar with the Northstar alternator and the code that can occur with inferior rebuilds. They will rebuild mine if I drop it off also. Thanks for the info on Hite Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
James Woods
Be thankful we are not talking Maybach alternators .a few years back at the dealer I work at we had a Maybach 65 with a bad alternator. It was like 3 months out of warranty. The part was $12,000. Labor was about $2500. Maybach goodwill the alternator and customer paid for labor. It was a 275 amp that is shaft driven off a Jack shaft from the rear of the engine. It is cooled by coolant and bolted to the block and lubricated by engine oil. All those electronics and accessories in the car use a ton of power. I guys if you can buy a $250,000 car a $15,000 bill for an alternator is no big deal. But me I'd cry, then poop, then cry more.
