Thanks. I figured that is how it went.

I have FSMs for my Seville too lol.

I went over all of the codes and none relate to the coolant temp. Too bad a overheat wouldnt throw a code. Then I would know if it overheated hot enough

Actually overheating enough will throw a code or two, like P0217. You get the limp-home mode, the "CHANGE ENGINE OIL" message, etc.

Going with "assume nothing"...

There is more than one type of thermostat and the old pre-Northstar style has a different coolant flow. And, it may be possible to put the thermostat in backwards. If in doubt about the thermostat I would get a new AC/Delco with the right part number for your car and use the FSM diagram to make sure that it went in properly, ignoring how the old one came out.

I'd you have access top a infared temp gun you can get car up to operating temp then check the radiator for temperature from top to bottom and left to right. If there is a blockage on the radiator it'll show as a cold area. I've seen new radiator not flow to an area because of pinched tubes in the end tanks.

That is great info, i have one of those laser thermometers, great use for it, I use it to find dragging brake calipers. Also used it on my friends Honda marine engine on start up, his 2 stats, freeze up over the winter and we can easily see a bad stat. Thanks, great tip

This car has no codes for that. Thank you for reminding me. A overheat will set the OLM to 0. So I am thinking it did not get that hot. I will post more shortly The OLM is at 83% currently

I'm lost on the vacuum line for the tester. The tester I use just has a bulb on the end like a turkey baster. Basically you put the fluid in the tester then use the bulb to pull an air sample into the fluid. If there any combustion gases present then the fluid changes color.

Yes mind is like that with a little baster pump on top that sucks radiator air through the fluid, when there is a bad headgasketnthe color change is instant. Very cool tool

Update 11/21/15.

Pulled and replaced the thermostat. Tested both new and old. Both opened around 200. Both the same brand too. could not get Ac Delco without ordering it. Wish it was available.

Coolant looked weird, must have been a mixture of coolants.

Old thermostat was damaged where it seats into the housing( not sure why or if it would affect anything)

I put 3 crushed supplement tabs in the lower hose

I put my purge funnel onto the surge tank and filled it. Took about 2 gallons.

I then ran the engine to temp. It seemed to smoke a bit from the exhaust. My sinuses are so bad I could not tell what it smelled like. It was not a crazy amount but enough to be noticed.

I kept squeezing the hoses and this nasty black stuff was coming up into the purging funnel, stunk like heck too. Like what I couldnt tell though.

Once I was confident all of the air was out I put the cap on. It ran fine up to 222 then fluctuated between 205-217. Cooling fans both worked fine.

Hottest it got was 222.

I let it run for a good 30 minutes like this.

Took cap back off and did another combustion test. Same result. No change in color.

Replaced cap.

I am stumped with this one. Oil change is at 83% so I know it did not get hot enough to activate limp home mode. So I wonder how hot it got?

I am going to try to take car for a drive tonight and see what it does.

It sounds good! Enjoy the ride! Dont read anything into it, keep in mind there are a lot of unknowledgable people out there. Maybe the mechanic scared the owner. You can only go with what you are finding. Flush the coolant tank to get rid of that black stuff maybe think it can clog the air purge bolt?

You might have scored the best deal in the country on that car if the headgaskets are not leaking!

I am not getting my hopes up yet. I dont have the greatest luck. I guess I will find out.

It sucks that I cant drive it more without putting it on the road. I dont want to put it on the road and find out a week later.

Ok so tonight I took the car for a drive.

Took it directly to highway speeds.

The power is great, Shifts great, cant even feel it. torque converter works just fine, No shudder. The ride is incredible. (The deville ride)

The not so greats.

Coolant got up to temp quick. On hard acceleration it gets up to 235 but quickly drops to 205ish. I held on just to see if it would get hotter and it only went down. I have no idea if this is normal or not.

The exhaust sounds horrible. Someone backed into something and crunched the mufflers. Both are shot

Fuel filler tube must be rotted. Like dejavu. When I bought my 96 I had the same problem.

Personally I dont care for the swings in coolant temp but I guess you guys might have better thoughts.

My 96 Deville always ran around 195 no matter what. Once in a great while it would run up to 210 on a hot day in traffic.

Time to check the radiator see if you get one of those infared laser thermometers, harbor freight has them cheap. Rest your mind, you checked the coolant for by products, the 235 spike is odd in this outside temp.

Check the water pump belt tensioner, that is provides enough tension. Did the belt appear polished? How was the small pulley on the tensioner, rough, wobble?

See if its losing coolant, maybe you spontaneously lose pressure driving up the temp, where it leaks under pressure.

Hows the cap?

The 235 spike and the smoke from the exhaust makes me think there is a problem. when I rev it about half throttle it smokes pretty good from the exhaust.

I have a IR tester but was not sure what the temps should be. Kind of difficult to get to with fans and what not in the way

Steam coming from the exhaust is normal my 96 would also drip.

The tranny feels good? No converter slip?

Something tells me that your radiator is clogged, its showing itself when you accelerate either that or pump belt slip.

You would have failed the by products test if you had a head gasket issue.

Are you consuming coolant?

Not sure. I have only driven it 10 miles. It actually smokes from the exhaust.

Transmission works great, identical to my old deville. Just confirms that the one I looked at before was not working.

I nailed the shift and lockup points on this one.

I will recheck the tensioner and belt. It looked fine at idle but I will remove tension and the cover to better inspect it

After a coolant change, you need to run the car up to a week to detect the beginnings of head gasket leakage. But if you are testing old coolant, then you are good.

I would change the coolant and put in 50% red coolant, then do the rest of the used-car maintenance, clear the codes, and drive it. If it has driveability problems such as overheating, then, post the codes and we will go after anything remaining to be fixed.

Ok I will have to wait to get the car on the road. Once I get it on the road I will drive it hard and see what happens. I will change the coolant in the meantime. Thanks for all the help.

Using the ir temp gun is check the radiator from top to bottom and left to right. If there are any cold spots where coolant not flowing you'll know because in that area the temperature will be drastically different. Like maybe rest of radiator is about 195-250 range that area will be 100 degrees. Remember the coolant will enter hotter than the gauge reads and exit cooler. Prob enter at 265 and exit at 180. Where the temperature sending unit is coolant will new about 200. With the temp gun you can also check the thermostat housing and houses around it.

The Ir gun told me exactly when the thermostat was opening, and the reading before it was pretty dead on to what the dash was saying.

I did check the radiator but will have to check it again. I did not write those readings down.

The good news is that you now know that the dash gauge reads pretty accurate and it's not a problem with the gauge or sending unit.

The ir temp guns are pretty handy. Really good for checking a dragging brake like a caliper not completely releasing or hung on a slide pin. And wheel bearings. Plus the famous north star water pump tensioner pulley

I use it all the time. I do alot of AC work and it works to compare temp readings from the vents. Especially when you have tie in systems.

I also use it to diagnose bad Catalytic converters

lol. Still have a soft spot for the 96. Hope I can get used to the 97 looks.

I went by a beautiful 96 fleetwood this morning. What a sharp car that was. The looks changed a bit in 97. Seemed to be cheaper looking.

Yeah, I like the looks of the 94-96 Deville. I had a 97 and didn't care for it.

Only thing keeping me from the fleetwood is because I like the northstar.

But my opinion is that the Deville and the fleetwood in those years were the best looking luxury on the market
