Cadillac XLR - Top down, no shift

Recommended Posts

This morning I saw a new odd sequence of events in my 2007 Cadillac XLR.

I started the car, intending to head to church. The XLR started properly, and I pushed the button and the top started to go down / into the trunk (which it completed properly).

At that point (while the top was going down) the service stabilitrak and ABS lights came up on the dash. I completed the top down exercise, and turned the car off.

I am used the some flakiness or sensitivity with the XLR, so I grabbed my generic scan tool and cleared all codes, then restarted the XLR.

The automatic gear shift would not shift out of park.

I was on a timer to get to church, so I put the top back up and turned off the car. I decided best not to take the XLR lest I have an issue away, and to move to the STS-V.

Curious however, I retried starting the XLR, which started normally, and shifted normally. I took the car to church top up, then after church around to grab brunch and home top down.

I wonder if the sensitivity I am experiencing has something to do with a brake interaction -- such as the brake pedal system isn't properly reporting. That would keep the transmission locked out?

The generic code reader happily showed no codes. This may be because it doesn't relate to GM specific codes. Actually I probably need to play with it further, as it may read more and I'm just not punching the right things.

Okay, to be fair my code reader does claim to do GM specific codes, but even with a stabilitrak message up on the DIC it saw no custom codes. When I restarted the engine, no messages either. So it is a transient event of some sort.

Gosh that makes good sense Mike. I have another project in work for what happens when you order a Chinese Tech 2 that may help.

I am curious about how good your new Tech 2 is, I am considering one of the snap on models, currently figuring out which one is the best for me.

BodybyFisher if you haven't already seen the post/reply by barczy01 on Bruce tech 2 post, you might want to check with him on your specific needs. I am sure the snapon can do things the tech 2 can't and vice versa. I know I wanted to not only read body codes but have the ability to send also, for the xlr top. Bruce probably had the same needs.

I have a snap on solid, way back I traded in a mt2500 brick. Just like the brick was snap on scanners big plus side is that they are easy to get upgraded. If you buy new you can only get programming for domestic, then add others when you need like European or Japanese. Just call your dealer or find a snap on truck at a shop and have them flash it.

The BIG downside is cost. You will way overpay. If you buy used have a dealer check the unit or serial number and make sure its not stolen.

Look into Diagun products. Clones are cheap and work great. If you want more diagun info and review of it,start a new thread and I'll go through it .plus a distributor will let you test drive diagun for a week.

Thanks Guys, I am going to go cheap, I think that the unit Bruce purchased will be a good way to get my feet wet. I am waiting to see how he likes it. Yes, the Snap On stuff is expensive, I was thrilled to see the price of the Tech 2 knock off.
