Mine are right on the floor .I've wondered how it would be if they were higher.I can judge that better with some road miles on it.It's been a long busy day so, I'll try post pics of the engine compartment and the pile of c@#p carpeting I took out.My youngest Grand son could have done a better job on the interior of this car and he's two..

This pile was pulled out of the inside of the car.No rhyme or reason ,just kind put here and there. It's not perfect now but much neater. Also, a couple pics of the engine compartment after a tune up and a little detail work .NYS inspected( a whole different drama there) and cleaned up foe our first car show at NAPA in the AM. 6-13-14001.jpg6-4-14002.jpg6-4-14001.jpg

No problem about the duplicate post. I deleted one of them for you.

It's always fun to meet new people and make new friends.

I'm hoping that we get the entire Duke community coming to this board. We are all ready to help out with replicas with Mustang II/Pinto or Chevette running gear, and the community has a lot to share. Like drawings and publications, parts and parts sources, experiences and how-to explanations, all of which are of interest to many of us.

I think it's just awesome that a forum devoted to a particular make would have so much input and positive reinforcement for a completely different type of car.You guys have stepped and really been very helpful sharing your knowledge and opinions.A father and son team I met yesterday both have Monte Carlo SS cars and offered some good tips on my car. Thank you..

The board is a Cadillac enthusiast site and many members have been Cadillac aficionados for many years, even since childhood. Enthusiasts are car people. I'm more than willing to do what I can for anyone, such as researching all the international models that share the Chevette running gear for a Duke owner that needs a U-joint carrier extension. Some of us can do much more, like access hands-on experience with these cars.

So here's the problem..Thought the the car was running poorly and when I changed the the fuel filter, the brown crud was reason to look further.Major problems when I pulled the tank and removed the sending unit.Shocked it ran at all.New tank and sending unit on the the way.Sure glad I waited before installing newly rebuilt Holley carb.tankinside-1.jpg?t=1403483705gaspipe.jpg005.jpg

Thank you. New tank and sending unit on the way.Muriatic acid bath for filler pipe worked rally well.Going to find some galvanizing spray for the filler pipe and should be good to go..It's a wonder it ran at all. Will run it for a while after back together before installing the rebuilt Holley 2 bbl.Should even have a working gas gauge.Hopefully get the top back on and rig up some sort of side windows as we are taking it on 50 mile trip to a car show on the 7/12-7/13 weekend. We really need to get away for a bit.

i took my Duke for a 8 mile jaunt (16 mile roundtrip) last Friday but clearly I am way off the 50 mile pace. I might could get to Texas Jim's place by 50 miles.

Had the Duke SS100 out to pick up dinner tonight, and got to talk about the Duke and cars with Shawne Forrest from http://www.taxreductionspecialist.com/

He saw the Duke in the restaurant parking lot and we chatted about the car, and then went around the block for a quick in-car experience.

I just did a general web search on "Chevettte parts" on dogpile and got pages of links. I went to my favorite source for picky parts, GMPartsDirect.com, and find that the differential housing for the 1984 Chevette (which is probably the same for all of them) is still available. They're not discounting them so the demand is there, and this is not a clearance listing.

Don't let anyone tell you that Chevette parts are hard to get. Cheap, no, particularly new parts. Used parts are difficult on any car once a it gets over 20 years old because recyclers send old cars to the crusher. But they are out there for the asking.

I checked gmpartsdirect and what I found for the '84 Chevette was the main axle but nothing for the extension and no internal parts like I was able to come up with. I did not contact them specifically asking about what I needed. I don't have to worry about body parts, and most of the running gear and engine stuff is available from various sources. Rick, the Chevette guy in Washington, told me that he once had 17 scrapped Chevettes in his yard that he sent to the crusher. Worst decision he ever made. I am following two Chevette forums, and am finding some help there including several folks who have or know of parts cars.

I did a search on Car-Part.com on rear axles of Chevettes and related models of any year and turned up pages of them. I did NOT turn up any empty axle housings or see the extension as a separate part, so a phone call and perhaps an e-mailed photo would be wise in negotiating with anyone that you find offering parts who is not local.

The web servier for GM Parts Direct is overloaded right now so I can't check about the axle extension. When I looked yesterday, it seems to me that they showed the axle housing as a single assembly.

The extension housing is generally regarded as a separate unit between the rear U-joint and the differential (pictured from red circle right to differential). AFAIK, the rear driveline setup is the same among Chevettes through 1985, although different gear ratios were used.

ChevetteAxlePic.jpg

I am pretty sure the parts site is referring to the main axle/differential unit and would be surprised if the extension was included at the price. If you find anything different, let me know or PM me, or I'll check later. I think there are several Chevette owners who would be excited to find some nice new or even rebuilt extension housing units, especially with new rubber parts and bearing. Speaking of bearings, that extension shaft bearing is non-existent, according to my WA contact. He said he has scoured various parts places and bearing distributors and could not find one to match. I don't have any info on the part number or size. I have one on hold from him (his last one) if I find I need to replace mine.

(Sorry to hijack Bruce's thread, which is really about a Ford-based Duke. I'll pick this up on my thread later. I'm off to Alaska.)

  • 2 weeks later...

Progress finally.Got the new tank and sending unit installed, not without issues of course, and the gas gauge even works now.We took it out for weekend trip.About 125 miles round trip and it ran and drove quite well, but this car definitely does not like rough roads.Thinking I need to check shocks ,springs and whatever else as it seems to take any little bump quite hard .Oh well, just more on the to do list.
