Scan Tool

I picked up a service manual from ebay, one of those CD's you have to install on the computer. Its got the GM logo and says "Electronic Service Information 1980-2005 on it.I havent given it a real good going over, but it seems to connect to the internet and pull the info from there.Has a lot of different GM options, not just Caddy.Anyways,it seems that I would need a scan tool to make full use of this manual.I looked on ebay and see a lot of OBD-II's available from $39 to $3000.Obviously,you get what you pay for,but what would I actually need for basic diagnostics?Do they all perform the same function? My last Caddy was a 92 with the on board diagnostics,no need for the scan tool,so I'm a bit lost on what I should get. Will any scan tool made for "OBD-II" do for my '01 Deville?

Your Deville can display DTCs. The instructions used to be on this board but I can no longer find them.

Memorize this procedure....

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

DTC display; 1998-2004 Seville and 2000-2005 Deville

Use the 3 switches located to the right of the Driver Information Center (DIC) to activate and respond to the OBD prompts on the DIC.

ON/OFF = YES

INFO RESET = NO

INFO DOWN or INFO UP = manual toggle

Ignition ON, acknowledge any warning messages; press ON/OFF and INFO UP together for 2 to 3 seconds. Everything in front of you lights up for 4 or 5 seconds, then you will see:

Display shows "ALL?"

Answering YES will display "ALL CODES?"

Answering YES will run automatic test sequence and display codes, if any. Systems and codes will scroll faster than I am able to read them and write them; not to worry.

"ALL CLEAR CODES?" will display at the end of the automatic test. If you are satisfied you have the information you need, answer YES

to clear/erase all error codes.

Answering "ALL?" with INFO DOWN will toggle systems test manually in order.

Answering "ALL?" with INFO UP will toggle system test manually in reverse order.

Press INFO RESET to reset DIC to "ALL?" to start again.

Ignition OFF to exit.

You'll need a tool for OBD II (but make sure it is

C. A. N. (Controller Area Network)) capable. Some of the cheap ones may not be.
