olddog Posted April 4, 2012 Report Share Posted April 4, 2012 Does anyone know of something one can put on the front of a car to prevent the dreaded bug splatter when on long trips? I know how to remove 90% of them in minutes but if I knew of something to apply to the car it would make this even better. I was told to put, get this, Pledge on the car prior to a trip. the theory is that if you spray it one and let it alone it remains viscous enough to essentially prevent bugs from truly sticking - who knows? He recently had it reapplyed after front end work, I sent him a PM to ask him to pop in here once radio communication resumes as ionization stops from re-entry. I had 3M clear plastic film put on the entire front of my car... including the bumper, front 12 inches of the hood, the headlights and the front side of the mirrors. It doesn't keep the bugs from getting on the car... but it does make it easier to clean them off without worrying about scratching the paint when you are scrubbing the bugs off of it. It also prevents rock chips and dings from traffic debris... When I had to have a new bumper put on it last year because I didn't stop soon enough... I had new film applied to the new bumper also. I love it and when I get another car... I can guarantee, that will be the "FIRST" thing I do to it. I will go back it out of the garage and take a pic of it. Will post pic in a few minutes. I've also heard that Pledge is fairly good at keeping the bugs from sticking (in the first place); I would think a fresh coat of wax would help as well. The 3M plastic is across the leading 12 inches of the hood and wraps down over the fender behind the headlight. The front bumper, the headlights and the area between the grille and headlights are also covered with it. Not too bad for 113,000 miles... The little red spot on the passengers side of the front bumper is from where I hit a big bird in Nebraska last year at about 125 MPH... 'dog I had it done at a shop that does customizing to trucks and fancy vans. I "WILL BE" putting it on my next car... immediately... :) Get the real 3M stuff... Don't settle for the off brands... they will start turning yellow after a couple of years and you will have to get it replaced again. This might be a good place to start... If this don't help... olddog Posted April 23, 2012 Author Report Share Posted April 23, 2012 I had to go to Indy and prior to leaving I sprayed the front with lemin Pledge. Prior to leaving the front had liggle gnats over it and I assume they were attracted to the scent of the Pledge. After almost 1400 miles of interstant the front end looked like it lost a 'black paint ball' event. It was nasty. Got home and put paper towel over all of the front including the lights/grill etc and wet it down with warm water for a bout four to five minutes. I then wiped the covered area and took off about - how does one estimate this? - about 98% of the insects. It worked well. The down sides are as follows: it attracts some insects by the scent, it will 'run' over other areas with heat and air flow too. However, this is a small price to keep from scrubbing one's butt off trying to remove these irritants. I will keep doing this until I can get the 3M stuff for the front and treat the car properly.
