A Small Contest For Speed...

Recommended Posts

Day before yesterday, Darling Wife and I were going to meet our son and some other friends for lunch.

We were going around the loop on the West side of town... it is 5 lanes each direction and usually has very little traffic on it.

That day there was almost no traffic at all.

Got into a little competition with a 2004 GTO... smile.gifsmile.gif

I was in a bit of a hurry and he didn't want me to pass him.

He stood on it at 80 and I did too.

He pulled me a little bit from 80 to about95 ... from 95 to 115 I held my own... from 115 to 130, I was gaining on him..

He either hit the speed limiter at 130 or let off..

By that time I was back up beside of him.

I passed him but then slowed back down to more or less legal speeds.

He never would come back up beside me again... haha

Does anyone know what the HP was on a 2004 GTO??

I was really surprised when he didn't pull me real bad when we stood on them.

I was also surprised when I started catching him... I kinda figured he would just run off and leave me.

Then again... maybe he was geared for drag racing and hit the REV limiter... I don't know.

Jim see this

Looks like an 350hp LS1 engine at 4,465 pounds.

The one I like is the G8 GXP with a 6.2 LS3

Dang... That things heavy... it is almost as heavy as my DTS...

On the scales with a half tank of gas, mine weighs just a hair over 4700 lbs.

It was fun... I hadn't did that in a while... but I did get "THE LOOK" from Darling Wife... LOL LOL

The 2004 GTO is a nice car, but didn't sell well perhaps due to very conservative styling, perhaps because currency translation (these were made by Holden in Australia and imported) drove the price from the target of $25K to $30K.

Dealers were also asking for profit above MSRP when they arrived.

The Ks of leftover 04s were on fire-sale pricing when the 05s arrived with 50 more HP and the LS2 V8. People posted about buying new 30K cars for 15K.

The GTO is what the Catera V8 might have been if Cadillac had brought a LS1 in the Catera -- same Commodore V-body chassis. So I am a fan just for the might-have-been -- of course by 2004 the CTS-V had also arrived.

Yes, they are heavy, and the current zeta chassis derived from that line is heavy also. One of the things that is REALLY exciting about the swap

to the new alpha chassis for the ATS and next CTS is that we will have Cadillacs in the low 3K lbs again, only with today's engines and power.

Nice to hear your 06 DTS is running so well. Jim -- I'm going to head back to the dyno Monday 9th if you want to get together in McKinney; schedule 2-5 pm.
