96 deville slight sputter

Recommended Posts

I just bought a 96 deville with 194,XXX miles. It had o2 Spenser bank 1 sensor 1 code and transmition input speed sensor.

It then threw a random miss code. Changed plugs and wires and have not seen it sense. The problem I am having is when I start it seems to sputter to life and sometimes going down the road like 55 and I press gas pedal it seems as though it is missing bad and motor is jumping around in engine bay. I am in the presses of changing the o2 sensor but it is so hard to get to. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

could be a leaky fuel pressure regulator. Does it sputter on startup, pop sometimes like a backfire?

Pull the vacumn line at the driver side rear of engine at fuel rail. If it has fuel in it replace the regulator

The codes are as follows

Po133 h02s slow response bank 1 sensor 1

P0134 h02s circuit insufficient activity bank 1 sensor 1

P0603 control module long term memory reset

P0717 input speed sensor circuit no signal

I don't have a fuel pressure gauge but I did pull the vacuum hose off. Didn't have gas spitting out. Should it be very noticeable or will I need to really get down there and look.?

It is possible that it won't be REAL noticeable...

Start and run the car for just a few seconds....

Pull the rubber hose and SMELL the end of it.

There should be no gasoline smell in the hose... if it DOES smell like gasoline... replace the FPR...

Ok thanks. I'll do that tonight before I head to work. I also noticed today that there was a puddle of water directly behind tire on passenger side. Doesn't smell or taste like coolant. Would that be a/c run off?

Most likely... that's where it normally drains out...

Ok I checked the fpr closer. Inside of the vacuum hos was dry and I had to lay across the engine to try n smell. It was very very faint but could smell gas. Just to be sure I'm going to go to the pull-a-part place n see if I can grab a few for cheap. New question what year models can I get parts from for my deviille?

If you are going to a scrap yard, they have excellent substitution manuals, ask them, match them up, and make sure that you get all O-RINGS, including the tiny one

Any recamendations on miscilanious parts to pick up.

I would look at the idler wheels, tensioner, and water pump tensioners to see if they are in good shape

Look over your hoses and replace as necessary from the yard

You might get the O2 sensor you need also,

Keep in mind that with those O2 sensor codes, the engine will not go into closed loop and will run rich. You should NEVER run the engine long with O2 sensor codes you will ruin your CAT

I'm pretty sure the previous owner ran a ill while with the o2 bad. Wen I changed the plugs they were white.

So it's safe to say I need an exhaust system. Thank goodness Mississippi doesn't do emissions tests.

Its safe to say you need an exhaust system? ASSUME NOTHING

The worst that could happen from a bad O2 sensor, is a RICH MIXTURE that COULD damage your CAT, NOT THE ENTIRE EXHAUST SYSTEM, but don't even ASSUME that until you fix the O2 code. You are NOT getting CAT performance codes like the P0420, and UNTIL you get CAT performance codes, don't assume its bad.

Get the O2 fixed ASAP

These engines are great, they do not have emissions problems as long as you maintain them. Do some research on OPEN LOOP and CLOSED LOOP to understand why that O2 sensor code is bad,

This O2 code is probably your "sputtering" problem, not the FPR

Thanks a lot. Those are good reads. I spent another 3 hours today trying to get the o2 sensor out. I grinder on the crows foot socket but didn't go far enough. I've tried going from the bottom and top. I hate this thing right now.

Oh no, there is a special socket that you can buy that fits the O2 sensor, with a slit for the wire. Warm the car up first it will help. Use a breaker bar

I noticed to night it cranked good drove to work good and then when I pulled into the parking spot the idle was bouncing between 700 and 850. When it's idling good it's at 600. I have brought my new o2 sensor and I am going to fabricate my own tool at work tonight. I'm done trying to manipulate this socket trying to get it on o2 sensor.

You are better off buying the correct tool,

When you Do It Yourself, you are saving LABOR money of a mechanic at $100/hr and its best to get the correct tools to do the job correct and easily.

I do have the correct tool. I bought the o2 socket first. Couldn't get it on so I bought the crow foot 02 socket. Still couldn't get it on. I took the new 02 sensor and the crow foot socket to work and formed the crow foot socket to my needs. I will try n get some pictures up as I can't upload pics using my iPad. So once I got home I had the sensor changed in 10 mins. I have to work again tonight so I will be paying attention to how it runs. I am headed to the junk yard tomorrow morning and will be looking out for different things I might need in the future. So until the update y'all enjoy your caddy's!

Usually with the O2 socket, it comes right out, I have never had an issue and I have changed many, very odd, but I have heard others have difficulty.

Let us know how this turns out, good luck

I bought the car from my neighbor and I ask if they had changed any hoses. Come to find out when they had the radiator changed the mechanic told them it would be better to put steel or some sort of metal hose on the back side of the motor so were you don't have much room to begin with now there is a darn steel hose right on top of sensor. It was hard to even pull out of the threaded whole.

Ok I get to work tonight and no sooner as I pull in to my spot the darn service emission systems comes up. Now it's saying

p0171 fuel trim system lean bank 1

P0174 fuel system lean bank 2

P0716 input speed sensor ckt range/performance

I was getting on it a I'll on the way to work. Think that has anything to do with it. Thanks.

Check vacuum hoses, you have a vacuum leak that is affecting both banks, look at the PCV hose and valve and brake booster hose, that is the P0171 and P0174 codes

if you are doing the sensor at the rear toward the firewall I feel for you.I tried to do the one on my 97 SLS last year and even with the cadillac specified socket I couldnt get it. the coolant pipe is right there, and the heaterbox, and did I mention the engine. I gave up and took it to the dealer. 76.00 to change it. New one was defective and had to be changed again. Luckily I was able to do the replacement myself because the housing of thereplacement sensor is noticably smaller. I bough another special o2 socket and it came right out. no problems since.

When I asked the dealer how they changed it they said they dropped the rear of the subframe 2.5" and got it from the bottom.

good luck to you.

See my pics below and the clearance problem makes much more sense
