Perhaps the most important thing is to retrieve any diagnostic codes.

I am not sure if your Deville accesses them the same as a Seville, but you can try.

With the ignition turned on, hold down the Heater OFF button and the Auto button (it is like booting a computer).

Within about 3-5 seconds all of the indicator lights will come on. Release the buttons and let the system retrieve the codes.

As the codes are displayed, write them down, and then post here.

To get out of the diagnostic mode press the Heater Auto button, or turn off the key.

Another important thing to check are the fuses.

Access the trunk fuse box and look for one marked "IGN". Check and replace if it has failed.

Replace any failed fuse with the indicated amp value, putting in one of a higher value will cause a risk of severe wiring damage.

The 1994 Deville does list the on-board diagnostic (OBD) codes just exactly the same way as the Seville SLS does.

You really must have the codes. Without the OBD codes, and with an unfamiliar car, you are just throwing parts at it.

Each code will be of the form

P012 CURRENT

where the code, a letter and thee numbers, will be followed by CURRENT or HISTORY. The ones that are shown as CURRENT show tests that failed since they were last run. All of them run that don't need the car runni9ng when you first turn on the key, and the rest run as soon as running conditions are consistent with the test.

The example, P012, tells us "No distributor signal" which, if you have that code as CURRENT, tells us to check the distributor wiring and connectors.

Stop throwing parts at the car in the hope of finding the problem. That gets expensive in a hurry.

Simultaneously press and hold the OFF and WARMER buttons on the climate control panel and the codes will be displayed on the information center. Post the codes back on this thread and the troubleshooting process can begin.

P052 (E052) ....................................................... PCM Memory Reset

P039 (E039) ..... Torque Coverter Clutch/Viscous Converter Clutch Engagement Problem

I do no see an I059 only a P059 recheck that code

P059 (E059) ........................................ Transmission Input speed sensor

P052 is probably due to the battery being disconnected

But I do not see any reason why you should not be starting, the above codes should not impact starting

What is your fuel pressure at the schrader valve with the KEY ON?, we and you need to know that.

Do you have spark at the plugs, have you checked?

What is the status of the distributor cap, has it been replaced? Have you inspected it?

i was told by the mechanic my fuel pressure is ok. i replaced the spark plugs, and put a new battery on it when i first bought it. i dont know what else it could be. do you guys think i have a broken timing chain? i heard that could cause a car not to start.

i also looked in the pcm codes, and got a bunch of numbers. would those be relevent by any chance?

Did the mechanic give you the pressure of the fuel? - If not, I would not rule out the fuel pump. Chains failing is very rare to non existant.

When you turn the key to on (don't crank it), you should hear the fuel pump run for 5 seconds.

check fuses, and the connectors to the coil packs etc.

you have to narrow it down to no spark or no fuel.

What does this mean? I thought you posted the codes above? Call your mechanic and ask him WHAT THE PRESSURE was.

I asked about the distributor cap above, no response?

ok, i just talked to him and he said the pressure reading was at 48 psi an d that was normal. he also said my wires are probably bad, but i didnt want to keep guessing so thats why i am asking thecadilcadillac experts for advice . and no idid not changed a distributor cap.

OK, you need to pull the distributor cap and take a look at it for cracks, or carbon tracking, especially between the center tower and one of the cylinders.

Look at the rotor to make sure it looks ok, make sure it is not burned through to metal, I have been spark actually find its way through rotors.

Take a plug wire off a spark plug, let is hang next to metal, but NOT near any electronics, and have someone crank the engine briefly. Is there spark? Look for spark to make sure the that the coil is putting out. STAY AWAY from it, don't hold the wire let it hang, it will JOLT you.

There is a connector at the distributor make sure it is connected solidly.

Do you smell fuel? Check the INJ (INJECTOR) fuses to make sure they are not blown or corroded

How long did your mechanic inspect this, what was his findings?

how many miles on this engine? What is the history when was it run last? How is the fuel?, is it old?

Take one of the old spark plugs and unplug one wire from one of the plugs in the engine and plug the old plug into the wire. Ground the electrode of the plug and have someone crank the engine; do you see spark? If not, you have an ignition prolem.

Good Idea Kevin

Do these engines have an "ignition Control Module" in under the rotor in the distributor cap. it's that boomerang shaped componant.

I don't have much experience on distributors & rotors, but I know that that componant failing will give a no-start condition.

The distributor contains an ignition control module, it utilizes heat transfer compound if I recall to shunt heat away that must be used. I believe if it was bad, there would be no spark, and it may set a code.

If it turns over normally but won't start and the exhaust does not smell of fuel, it has no gas.

A bad ICM would set P012 code.

So if the ICM is bad, when cranking, it would detect that there is a failure on that component, and set a current code? I understood they are only reliable when the engine is running with a fault - and that cranking doesn't set some codes.

Big_Guy, you still need to check the distributor as BBF mentioned, and then let us know if there is spark. We cannon provide any further input untill we have an answer.

BTW, you are right simple & complicated. - but we need to narrow it down.

Experience going back many decades: crank the car for 30 seconds, turn the key off, walk to the rear and smell the exhaust area. If you smell fuel, it has no spark. If you don't smell fuel, it has no gas.

Other problems, such as bad compression or cam timing, show up in fast, funny or irregular cranking speed and other such, and you never walk around to the rear of the car. But nearly every time a no-start condition where the engine cranks normally but does not fire is no spark or no gas and a simple walk-around will tell you which in under a minute, without raising the hood.
