Northstar Headgasket Problems

Recommended Posts

I am the original owner of a 2002 Deville CTS with 120,000 miles on the Northstar engine. It has had excellent mechanical maintenance and still has almost show-room appearance. However,my research has indicated that head gasket problems were numerous and very expensive to address on the Northstar engines manufactured in the 1990's. Was this problem corrected, or significantly reduced on the 2002 production engines? I currently have none of the indicators of the problem.

I just purchased a new CTS and I need to decide whether to give the 2002 to a family member or let it go.

Thank you for any information you can supply.

Dorj.

The CTS and the Deville are two entirely different animals. Do you mean a Deville DTS?

The head bolts where lengthened in 2000 and the HG failures have significantly declined, but not completely gone away. GM went to a coarser thread pitch in '04 and I don't recall hearing of any failures in the 2004+ engines............ so far. Personally, I would not be too concerned about an '02.
