Check the purge line to be sure that it flows coolant. There is a hose at the top of the coolant tank, with the engine cold and off, gently pull that hose off, not the overflow hose the other one on top, let it hang, then get into the car and start it and let it idle, go look at the hose, it should flow coolant steadily. Let us know the result of that test.

Air gets out of the cooling system via that hose, if it is clogged the cooling system can not purge itself of air and the system will not fill and the water pump will cavitate and the engine will overheat.

If it DOES flow coolant, have your coolant tested by a radiator shop or a mechanic with the correct tools for combustion by products from a blown head gasket. You can also smell inside the coolant tank with the cap off to see if you smell exhaust fumes, you shouldnt smell fumes.

By the way, the low mileage does not matter, if the coolant was not changed per the recommended change interval, it looses its corrosion protection and can erode the head gaskets and get into the head bolt threads and corrode them.

i check the purge line and nipple a couple of days ago after reading some other post aslo check the nipple it didnt seem blocked but coolant seem to be a steady flow but not alot kinda look very low pressure flow if that makes sense is that correct for the purge line as for the coolant i got the car five years ago with 9933 and i never change the coolant which i feel like a idiot for was un awear of the problems i tried doing a block test with the kit from napa it didnt turn yellow at all not sure if i did it right tried 4 or 5 times the drivers side of the radiator does seem as hot should it be equaly hot across

thank you for your response im taking to cadillac for hem to test the block

Explain what you mean by overheating, what exactly is it doing?

well its a digiat read out and it goes up to four bars on the temp which is normal but keeps climbing to 5 and then 6 bars never let it overheat all the way but it starts smelling like burnt coolant under the hood this happens while driving or parked

You do not need a TECH 2... the car will tell you what is wrong with it.

1. Turn ignition ON to illuminate the dashboard.

2. On your climate controls locate WARMER and OFF buttons and press them simultaneously for a few seconds until you see some codes on the driver information center (DIC).

3. Be prepared to write them down as they progress.

4. Turn ignition OFF.

5. Repeat the steps if you missed something.

thanks for the links i was able to find how to get the codes there was alot of codes three and something to do temp sensor failing the codes where b0510 b0515 b0520 do u know if these would cause it to overheat and what they are and what a bad head gasket code would be if there is one thanks for the help so far

B0510 - RH Panel Discharge Temp Sensor Failure

B0515 - RH Heater Discharge Temp Sensor Failure

B0520 - Rear Discharge Temp Sensor Failure

These codes are part of the HVAC system... they have nothing to do with the engine overheating.

Post your other codes also...

Please also post the code definitions when you post the codes.

We do not have them memorized.

You should notice whether these codes are history or current

Typically when there are so many codes, the battery or battery connections are at fault, I would check them

p1536 P1536 - Engine Coolant Overtemperature - Air Conditioning (A/C) Disabled

p0340 P0340 - Camshaft Position (CMP) Sensor Circuit (are you stalling intermittantly?)

p0385 P0385 - Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor B Circuit (same as P0340)

p1624 P1624 - Customer Snapshot Requested - Data Available (don't know how you did this)

i had to change battery about a week ago it was bad i think they all said history because three years ago i had the crankshaft sensor replace was stalling but once it was replace i have been good ac over temp is because it start to overheat after i had the water pump replaced because i was told that was the problem as for the snapshot i was trying to pull codes and was told to hold the off button and defrost and it said it took a snapshot so really the codes arent saying anythings wrong with it

OK, you need to delete all codes see my signiture and read how, delete all codes and then start over checking codes and post them again, but be sure that the battery cables are clean and connected good. and make sure you have a good battery of the proper size.

Battery power and battery connections are very important in these cars

If you replaced the crank sensors, that code should not still be there, and if you disconnected the battery these codes should be gone, that is why I think your positive cable is dirty, clean it good.

you need to check both positive and negative battery cables.

Personally I never run any coolant for longer than 2 years whether I drive it every day or it sits.

Now that purge line should flow steadily but it seems normal to flow steady without alot of pressure. All your confirming is that you have flow.

I highly recommend that if the coolant is not brand new that you get a good whiff of the smell in the tank for exhaust fumes.

Another way to tell HG failing is on a cold start it will miss for a short while and even out. (not always but I have seen it on most)

You say you smell burning coolant. Thats good. Possibility of an external leak. also important to check yor radiator cp. Most times if questionable I just replace it. It is good insurance

GM FAN FOREVER

Nice, clean, luxury= fine automobile

This is such a shame

So you have had the car for five years or since 2007 is that correct?,

You say you have babied it, mostly what kind of driving have you done?, highway, or commuting stop and go?

So assuming you bought it in 2007 the car had 9000 miles on it? Why such low mileage at that point? Did it just sit in a garage?

Regardless of the mileage, the coolant would have needed to be changed in 2005 if it was Dexcool and more often if it had green coolant.

What do you know about this car? Do you have the service records? Have you run a carfax type of report to confirm the mileage and any service? I am not saying that its possible in your case, but I have seen people turn back the mileage in a big way (60,000 miles) and then give the car back at the end of the lease. Not sure if a carfax would turn that up. Unless I am reading your post wrong 9000 miles in 7 years is 1300 per year.

I am sorry about your head gaskets if they are in fact causing your overheating. I dont like their description that there are TRACE amounts of combustion by products. With the kind of overheating you are having, I would expect to have more than TRACE amounts. But the fact remains that you are overheating, and assuming it holds pressure, the cap is good, cooling fans work, belt and tensioner are good, radiator flows, purge line flows and coolant is 50/50 not much is left.

Had you put a substantial amount of new coolant in right before the dealer's coolant test?

This is very interesting that a head gasket is going at such a low mileage, not sure if we have seen this before. I think our members need to digest this one for their ideas on the cause of this failure.

Good Luck with this, timeserting is good, but look into studding the block also (www.northstarperformance.com).

Please provide us with as many facts regarding maintenance and history that you can, you have an interesting case

i will do a carfax report on the car and yes i have had it five years just paid off the car in may i bought from the cadillac dealer ship used with 9933 thousand miles and was told the mileage was so low because the died and her daughter never drove and let it sit in the garage wether thats true or not dont know with in the five years of me owning it oild was change ealy every time and drove a mix of stop and go and highway i have never been one to drive fast or beat on my car i have own five deville over the last 12 years it has 44234 thousand miles now i have until this problem i have only had to replace crankshaft sensor when it start overheating i took it a local mechanic and he replace water pump and water pump housing he also did new vavle cover gaskets and spark plugs and coil packs i did the thermostat upper and lower rad hose and ne radiator cap so it did have alot of new coolant and wasnt drove much since the new coolant

So it is possible that the original factory fill of coolant was in the car when you got it 5 years ago. That would mean that it surpassed the 5 year change interval but the question is by how much.

So the first time the coolant was changed was when you started having overheating problems? Is that correct? When was that?

So what I am getting here is that coolant was probably never changed, lost its corrosion protection before you got the car, and then you drove it about 34000 miles, does that sound right?
