If you dont mind me asking what is wrong with your current cluster?

Have you tried disconnecting the battery?

Replacing with a used unit requires reprogramming to your vehicle. And if it is the cluster itself that is bad, there are companies that rebuild them.

Honestly I have yet to see any go bad without a darn good reason

:welcomesmiley: hi @SAMUEL welcome to CaddyInfo.  Oddly, sometimes the dash cluster can be related to the connection for the positive battery cable.  Have you had to disconnect or replace the battery lately?  It can also be related to the light sensor -- the dash is not off per se, it is simply operating at a invisibly dim level.  Based on your description however it sounds like the dash cluster is not getting power.

To continue the thought, if I am right that the battery cable/connection is in play, what you would do is - with the engine off, key off -- disconnect the battery cable bundle on the positiive battery post, take the stacked cables apart, clean the connections, put them all back together, and re-attach to the positive post on the battery.

While doing the above, while they are disconnected from the battery, touch the.cables together for a couple of minutes to drain off any residual power.  If you still have problems I can go to my 96 manual

@SAMUEL  reports that on investigation he found that one of the fuse sockets in the trunk was not grounded properly.

To determine if the issue is the cluster next you will want to determine if the cluster is getting power or not. To do that I think you will need to probe the connection to the cluster with power on.  However, I would try again to disssemble and reassemble the positive battery cable first.  Once you get in to disassemaly of the dash to diagnose it becomes a project.

I was reading my manual tonight.  There is a DIC switch, that turns the DIC off, if I read it correctly.  Try toggling that switch on and off and see what happens, tap the switch, rock it.  If that switch is bad it will black out the DIC.

There are 2 grounds to look at also.  Ill research where they are an post.

Hi BodybyFisher,
SAMUEL reported a post in a topic titled 96 dash Info cluster out

I need to know where is the switch?

Samuel, I need you to do me a favor.  Do not reply to your thread here by hitting REPORT, go to the bottom here and reply, in the area that states REPLY to this message or topic.

Ill come back to you on the switch.  I had a 96, the switch should be obvious, it turns off the DIC.  Let me check the manual.

Samual, since your DIC is not working you can not retrieve diagnostic codes is that correct, yes or no?

It is possible that you may need to find someone that has an appropriate device that can extract BODY and IPC codes.  A simple code reader typically only retrieves P or Powertrain codes.

Here are the scans, I have done.  I hope these help for testing voltages and grounds.   See the Drivers Information Center (DIC) Inoperative.  I am not sure what they mean when they say, "when a DIC switch is pressed", they may mean pressing the "INFORMATION" button.  Normally you can cycle through various engine conditions along with fuel statistics.

I hope this helps, it was a lot of scanning.

Samuel, if you press information, does ANYTHING show up on the bottom of the center like Coolant Temp, the Charging Rate, Timer?

Does the DIGITAL SPEED show up in the square box?

Turn the head light switch to see if it brightens the center portion.

See if you can extract codes, on the heater and AC control push the OFF button and the top (warmer) buttons together.  See if the DIC shows the codes, if it shows codes run this until you can write down all codes.

I want to see what you are getting here.  If you are not getting anything let me know.   I may need you to get to a dealer to pull ALL codes.
