hello everyone im new to owning caddy's so any info will help.. I have a 2005 cts with 81000 miles on it and When I'm at a stop the engine jerks, it does it with the a/c on and off and only when i'm at a light or stop sign never when it's in park or when i'm moving. I've taken it to two shops and both times it never does it when i'm there. any suggestions would be great.

Does this KICK happen just once or is it a rythmic kick like a miss?

Does the check engine light flash or is it on when this happens?

This is an odd problem that it would occur only at idle and not when you accelerate

What is the RPM at idle?, if it is very low you might get a lope

Has the throttle body been cleaned?

Have you checked to see if any DTC codes have been set?

Is this a repetitive 'kick' or are you only getting one KICK? Anotherwords, when its idling does it miss or kick over and over?

OK that is what I thought, its not a repetitive miss, its a random miss

Check plugs and coil boots for carbon tracking. When were the plugs changed last?

How is your fuel, could you have water in it?

550 rpm at idle in gear seems low, check the spec and see what it should be, my guess is 625 in gear but I may be wrong

Thoroughly clean your throttle body and throttle plate and if it has an IAC clean it, its possible that its very dirty and the idle air compensator (IAC) has reached its limit to affect the idle.

When did you change your fuel filter last? Put a fuel pressure gage on and observe what happens when you get the kick. For that matter check the fuel pressure to make sure its up to spec.

Because of the infrequency of this kick, it won't be easy to find

Are you saying that the dealer changed the plugs?, that is important.

Sometimes 'garage' mechanics will put dielectric grease on the plug boots. Other Cadillac models have plug boots that are impregnated with dielectric grease, to use additional dielectric grease can cause a miss as the high voltage will find a path to ground with the additional grease.

The other issue that can occur is that the AC DELCO plugs can occasionally lose their platinum pads. When that happens, the gap will get large very quickly, so you could have 7 plugs gapped at the correct gap and the 8th plug with a gap much larger, that can cause an occasional miss

Do you know how many miles are on the plugs?

Try a bottle of Techron but use it per the directions on the bottle (full tank). It is sanctioned by GM and it will clean your injectors, see this link

The other think I would look at if I were you would be to look at your under hood breakers and fuses. Pull each one and look at the prongs, any white or green corrosion use electrical contact cleaner and clean the prongs and the socket. Especially look at the injector and fuel pump fuses.

Do you know how to clean your throttle body?

One more thing occurred to me.

Check your alternator output voltage at idle. If it drops for any reason it will fail to supply sufficient current to drive the coils and cause a drop out.

A slipping belt or questionable battery connections or a bad battery should be looked into.

Put a volt meter on your battery to see what the charging rate is at idle then with the lights on, wipers on, rear defroster on,

the plugs carmax said they changed i have to find out exactly what they did. the plugs should only have about 3k on them. i check the fuses and breakers n all look good. now the throttle body i can probably clean um pretty good with those kind of things but if you got any directions. man that would be great

  • 2 months later...

Hey Franco actually we did figure it out it was a bad ignition coil which then caused the spark plug to go bad. I hope this helps u out I know its frustrating when something goes wrong n u can't figure it out
