Power Steering Rack Noise

Recommended Posts

So two weeks ago my Power Steering hose failed up by the pump... The Fabric based part of the hose basically ripped apart.

OK so I order a replacement AC Delco part from Rock Auto and a couple of days latter its in and all it good. (the new hose seems to be a much better construction and routes though the car slightly differently)

All is good until last Sunday when after the car has completely warmed up (and then some.... after about a 45 minute drive)

I can hear a noticeable Hissing noise coming from under the car. It sounds like air coming out of the tire or water rushing through a crimp in a garden hose... It only happens at certain RPM (1000-2000) and only happens with the steering wheel straight ahead... over 2000 RPM and it stops... turn the wheel and it stops, and it only does this after the car is completely heat soaked. I checked the fittings and there are no leaks, it all looks fine and the fluid is not leaking.

The noise is a little annoying, but just slightly louder then normal tire roar, and engine hummm... It is definitely coming from the steering rack. You can not hear it from the top of the engine Only underneath and in the passenger compartment.

No codes and the Steering works fine. No morning sickness or anything like that.

Anyone hear of anything like this?

Suggestions?

Objectionable hissing can be caused by a bad control valve in the power steering pump.

What kind of steering fluid was used when you refilled it?

How did you bleed the system?, could this be air?

Was the car driven much with low fluid?

I was thinking air as well. My sister had a similar problem with her car after having the ps high pressure line replaced. The guy who did it didn't bleed the system properly and it made all kinds of funny hissing sounds...and some groaning from the pump itself. Once she had the system bled right, the sounds went away.

1) Delco Fluid

2) No, maybe air,

3) No, not more then a few feet at most.

I have a vacuum pump... and will try the dealer procedure for bleeding this system... You would think that it would clear itself.

The only procedure that I know of to bleed the system of air is the continuous lock to lock, I've gone lock to lock 40 TIMES before the bubbles even started to dissappear(changed the pump/res.and filter). I am not aware of the dealer technique with vacuum pump...how is that done?

This is true, there is a specific bleeding procedure in the manual. Jack both wheels off the ground and go lock to lock at least 25 times slowly
