Andy tiger
I have a got my first big problem that is beyond me My caddy had clutch slip(done it to me twice now but then seems to sort its self out) and it was not engaging 4th ( 80 mph cruising and it was doing over 5000 rpm so I presume not changing into top gear) and it seemed to be changing gear a little erratic sometimes at lower speeds :dontknow: I did check the transmission fluid and it seemed to be low to me but was not 100% so I asked my local garage double check the fluid levels and they said it was low so have topped it up (with dexron 3 as recommended on the dip stick) its now decided to only let me have 2 gears 1st and 2nd it does change into 3rd but it wont drive as it just revs its nuts off similar to clutch slip in a manual (what ever they did seems to have made it worse) I have tried to check the fluid levels BUT when I take the dip stick out to check it is pouring hot bubbly trans fluid out of the filler hole. Went to another garage (who do some work on older American cars) and they have said its probably the clutch has gone or its overfull but he has said its more likely to be the clutch as it was not changing into to top gear before it was topped up but he don't know for sure So any ideas most welcome. ( I'm going to drain the fluid tomorrow and refill with new to see if that sorts it out and if it does I will give it a complete change of fluid replacing all filters) Many thanks. Andy tiger
Check for DTC codes. Is this an EXPORT cadillac? Post the codes here, are you seeing check engine light or messages? Thanks for the reply Its a export caddy. My friend imported from Japan 3 years ago and it was in storage for two and a half years (long story). I have owned it for 6 months and have had no major problems until now. There has been No check engine light or messages But the traction control light has come on occasionally but has never had gear slippage till very recently? How do I get codes? If I need to plug it into a computer I will have pop to my trusted mechanic on Monday as he has a computer that managed to read my wife's camaro when she had a sensor in the exhaust give up and the emissions went high on the MOT test. Andy tiger
Well have had my trusted mechanic look at it and he has managed to remove/syphon off 1 ltr of fluid so the fluid level is now correct and after test drive its defiantly not changing gear It is not even using 1st and 2nd as I first thought but is only using 2nd gear so it looks like the same problem I had a while back with My Winnebago that would not change gear but I bypassed that particular problem with a switch and got it changing gear on a switch (Never found out what was wrong with it ) :fan: He is going to speak with his gearbox specialist on Thursday for any ideas / price for repair :fan: :fan: its starting to look like it going to be an expensive problem to resolve

Andy tiger
right o Have been to a Specialist garage and had the computer read and there is no codes for the gear box coming up. He then took it out for a test drive and It apparently is changing 1st 2nd ,3 possibly but when it goes into 4th gear it seems to be no gear and just revs its little socks off so t is looking like its mechanical fault rather than electrical. He reckons 99% 4th gear is burnt out as the oil smells burnt and is not the red colour it should be so It looks like I will have to have a think on what to do as I have had a quote of £1844.75 GDP which is Roughly $2,922.06USD for a gearbox rebuild with a 12 month unlimited milage warranty.
